America The Beautiful

Post by Philadelphia Eagle »

Rising 27 stories above the streets of New Orleans and covering 27 acres, the Louisiana Superdome is the largest enclosed stadium in the world.

It is designed to house the most spectular extravaganza and small enough to accomodate a poetry reading.

A system of moveable bleachers gives the Superdome its versatility allowing the stadium to expand from a compact arena seating as few as 20,000 spectators to a football stadium, convention center or concert hall that can hold more than 103,000 people.

The photo shows Superdome workers unrolling 'Mardi Gras' artificial turf in preparation for a baseball game. Moveable seats along the lower concourse have been fully retracted to make full use of the playing area. The roof is out of range of even the loftiest fly ball.
