bear attack

Post by libertine »

You may have read about the grizzly bear killing two people on the Hulahula River in ANWR (Alaska). It was apparently a predatory bear attack, as they were experienced hikers, campers and had done everything right, i.e. sealed up all food, etc. They were attacked in their sleep and never had a chance. There was a gun in the tent, but unfired.

The woman was a retired teacher who taught with my Daughter-in-law and some of my good friends. I had left that particlular school just a year or two previously so only knew her in passing. But Alaska is a small town, especially within 'job communities'. You find yourself following or meeting the same people as you move along the career path. The school was a close community as is the very small town where it is located...and she was an excellent teacher. Needless to say everyone is terribly saddened today.

I read about this too. My condolences.

I like bears. I don't like being in their territory.

As I've gotten older, I've become increasingly wary of bears. You will never find me camping in a tent anymore in bear country. Doesn't matter if it is in California, Montana, Canada, Idaho, or Alaska.

I’ve camped out in a tent on Kodiak Island. I was much younger and thought my sidearm was all I needed. How foolish I was in my youth.

Wow! That was pretty gutsy. No, that was crazy! :p

Bears and crazy Moose (you can't tell if they are crazy until they charge you :wah: ) are the two land animals in North America that make me take pause. Luckily, there are no Polar Bears around here.

I was fishing on Kemmer (sp) Reservoir in Wyoming once in the mid 70’s. I was on the bank, all alone and I had the feeling someone was looking at me. I turned around and it was a moose. The critter was just standing there looking at me about 30 yards away. I was between it and the water, so I began moving to my right along the water’s edge. I reached a point where I could exit upland and did so quite abruptly.

heh! Good move!

We encounter Moose here on our property a few times per year. The rule for our household is simple. Stop and stand still. If the Moose keep moving and are walking through - you are generally okay. If they stop and take a gander at you and don't continue to move on, then move slowly behind a tree and continue to put distance between yourself and the Moose. Then, circle around and get into the house!

I'm with you TOMBSTONE no bears for me. I have camped all over the USA, and in Canada and Alaska.. NO way will I do the tent thing in Bear Country. On several occasions we have watched them come into camp and look for food.. We are safe and secure in our TRAILER.. Bears have my full respect, I will stay out of their way period. One came up to the Trailer once and tried to get in.. thank god we bear proffed it.. I could here it breathe, and snort.. was not a fun night.

Very sad about this couple, I hope they didn't suffer much, and it was quick..!! sounds like the bear was hunting them. :(

Why is it people keep forgetting that America is STILL a wilderness? The north american continent (that includes you, canada!) is still an untamed and wild place, home to any number of critters that will carry you off and EAT you! Look at the wildlife lists! When you live in a place where you still have bugs as big as birds, you can never let your guard down! Living in Texas and Arizona taught me a VERY healthy respect for all the howlies and furries that we encroach upon. We're just the caretakers of the place. It still belongs to them. Is it any wonder that americans are perceived as an extreme people? We live in an extreme environment. Any given day we can walk out the front door and step into a crevasse that had opened the night before. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, mudslides, floods of biblical proportions AND all the critters that share their turf with us. It's a place where the basic rule of life still prevails. We hunt and eat them. So naturally, they hunt and eat us. Just be glad we still dont have to deal with dino's for crying out loud!

I'm very sorry for the loss of a couple of good people, but camping in a tent in the middle of bear territory is like spitting in the wind. You just dont do it.

Raven,

Basically, I agree with you, except one always hopes that if you follow the 'rules' carefully things will go your way. This couple did. And, while bears DO live in ANWR, it is not generally known as 'bear country' (like Kodiak Island) and grizzly bears are not usually predatory, expecially toward humans. This accident was just incredibly bad luck even for the bear, as it was shot and killed by search and rescue.

Perhaps the necropsy will give some clue as to why it became a man-killer.
