New Zealand - Australia's seventh State

The Kiwis got the chance at Federation - but apparently preferred to go it alone. So now they change their minds. I, for one, am aghast and appalled. The next thing is we'll have Sam Neill for Head of State instead of the Duchess of Cornwall. It's a scandal!!!

What? New Zealand wants to become part of Australia, how not surprising, I mean Ireland is rejoining the UK anyway, and we are changing our religion to Islam as well just for the craic, its all good if you ask me. :-6

It is better to ask an american of they are canadian rather than ask a canadian is american. Americans don't take offence is mistaken on the other hand it seems to be deep insult to mistake a canadian for an american.

By the same token I always ask if someone is a new zealander rather than australian in case I insult a new zealander as it seems to be deeply offensive to be mistaken for an aussie.

Why would new zealand want to join with aussie anyway?

Yes, unless the UK leaves them and itself of course. ;)

We tend to claim any of their stars as our own anyway, and they all seem to come over here to work and live, so why not.

Anyway, it'd make us one heck of a powerful sporting nation!!! Just wouldn't quite so much fun rivalry across the Tasman!

I don't agree with that, I am Canadian and I get asked if I am American all the time. Most people would find it difficult telling the difference and I don't blame them, they mean no offence. I could not tell you the difference between an Austrian & German accent.

I take no offence, I have nothing against Americans (just their current leader).

What is funny though is how sorry people are when you correct them, I think that they feel like they have just insulted me or something.

Similarly

I expect many New Zealanders might be offended if accused of being Aussie

BUT

I expect that most Aussies would just be surprised if accused of being Kiwis.

The alleged rivalry is probably akin to the "rivalry" between Hawaii and mainland USA.

New Zealand markets itself excellently. And is a very fine "boutique" country. Beautiful scenery, a bit of everything. Oz, takes itself for granted. We're laid back. Nobody really can be bothered getting up from the long weekend on the beach to shout to the world that we're here. Visitors mostly find us without too much trouble (though I do recall one internet lovesick bloke who ended up in Sydney or Sidney, Canada by mistake).

This probably explains why almost every American I meet on the US ski slopes who identifies me as an Aussie shiela, immediately and surprisingly asks whether I've skied in New Zealand? In southern hemisphere ski season I ski Australia, Guys!! Looks like a bumper season coming up too.
