The variations on the 50p coin are all shown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_fifty_pence_coin
You can see how many versions there have been, most without Britannia.
"The government has said however that Britannia will return on future editions of the 50p coin."
Britannia's still there on the UK gold coins, nobody's proposed removing her from those.

I think its awful. Move with the times yes but not any any cost, regardless.
Last week there was the whole debate about helping people feel more British, helping them identify with their nationality and this week another icon is being scrapped.
I expect next week Nelsons column will be replaced because it's 'anti French' and maybe then Stonehenge because it does not reflect the multi cultural Britain of today.
Its no wonder Brits have no sense of nationality. For many years now they have been told its wrong and now its being taken away bit by bit and no one has the strength left to fight it.

Actually Stonehenge is being dug up this week by the BBC as part of its archeology series Timewatch.
Britannia never appeared on all British coins, Victoria. It appears on some. It still appears on some. It doesn't appear on most 50p coins in circulation at the moment, if I take my change from my pocket there are four 50p coins there and only one has a Britannia back. This is a minor decision by a minor functionary of the mint, not a revolution.

We've always been a mongrel nation. This debatee about Britishness is ludicrous. What is essentially british to someone is newcastle or birmingham is very different from that of someone in kent or surrey. About the only thing we all have in common is a healthy distrust or politicians and a strong inclination to shout F909K YOU you Bs----d every time we see one.
GB was up in aviemore at the scottish labour party conference. They had police guarding theplace to keep out any OAP's in case one of them shouted "rubbish" during any of the speeches.

I'm not British. I never have been. I'm Scots and we have no problem at all identifying with our nationality.
Apart from Gordon Brown, who is trying to take care of number one. I no longer consider him to be Scots. He has betrayed his principles, his beliefs and himself to hos own detriment.
