Couple win 100k on a scratch card and whinge they can't get benefits

A COUPLE who won £100k on a scratchcard and blew it in a year are now whingeing that a local council won’t give them housing benefit.



Wasteful ... the spending tally

Grasping John and Louise Nickels moan they can’t afford the £82-a-week rent for their £400,000 council flat.

They moved in before the October 2006 win and paid off hundreds in rent arrears.

Their benefit was then stopped but they still claim £90 a week incapacity benefit.

They blew the £100k on a £20,000 caravan, hols, home makeover, car, TV, fishing gear and playing FRUIT MACHINES.

In Florida they visited Universal Studios and SeaWorld and took two HELICOPTER trips.

The scroungers – who haven’t worked for years and have an unemployed son Paul, 25 – are also going to Turkey in May.

But when their cash ran out last November, Louise, 47, of Fulham, West London, contacted Hammersmith and Fulham Council for benefit.

They were turned down because they could not account for £29,580 withdrawn from cash machines and £12,000 moved to a new account.

He added: “We can’t prove we’ve spent all the money.

"They want receipts for everything.

John, 52, is fuming and they have refused to pay rent since February.

“A lot went on general living. A pint costs £3 and when two of you go out, money doesn’t go far.

"You can spend £30 without batting an eyelid and my wife has a love of fruit machines. I can’t get her off them.



John has been off work for years with a frozen shoulder, a condition easily treated with anti-inflammatory drugs.

Louise claims she is waiting for a hip replacement op.

A council spokesman confirmed a housing benefit application had been turned down, but could not comment further.

I get really wound up by people who make no attempt to work and expect the rest of us to fund their extravagent lifestyles. Bloody fruit machines and boozing!

Not much you can say to that beyond, "Pathetic". Mind you, it's a Sun report, so it's quite possibly invented or twisted to get sales up.

Thats why this country has gone to pot, people like these two believe they actually have a right to get every thing they want for free :-5. If their skint why haven't they sold their 20 grand Camper van :-5 and why are they sitting in the pub ??????.

I'm sick and tired of stories like this where women have 6/7 kids and the bloke just keeps getting young girls pregnant or couples claiming to be apart so they claim more money or people working cash in hand . This pair should both get off their fat backsides and get bloodys jobs . Benefits should be for the genuine needy ...why didn't they use some of that money to invest for their future . People like this just make me so mad

I think the biggest problem is that people like that think that they are doing nothing wrong. They've been brought up that way. There is one particular side of the city here which is also well known for people like that and the sad thing is that they get away with it. A comedian made a joke, he said that 82% of the blah blah side of Cork is unemployed but only 27% are really not working. I laughed first until I thought about it.
