why do people do this

We get a lot of that, too. A couple of years ago there was a rash of shark attacks along Florida's coast. Mostly tourists.

Is that the same Phillip Island with the penguins?

We see this alot in San Diego as well. People just don't read the signs or think it won't happen to them. :-5 Insane if you ask me.

Well we don't see this in Ireland to be honest because I don't think we have sharks, only really little fellows but there are people dumb enough to stand too near the edge.

Wouldn't bank on it in the future. We're getting more sightings of things like Mako and Great Whites off the coast of Cornwall, and Cornwall to Ireland is only a short distance... (this is only an impression mind you. Haven't looked for accurate data)

As far as human nature goes, if you put a button on the wall in a public place with a sign saying, "Do not press this button" I'd expect it to be worn out from overuse within a day. :rolleyes:

Whoops. Should have checked first - no reliable sightings, just a couple of reports by overexcited holiday makers being picked up by the press in the silly season. Basking sharks are the bulk of the sightings, and Mako are rare visitors and stay well offshore.
