THE race is on to become the next London Mayor.

Post by AA grumpy »

hello its only lord grumps here

yes its the run up to the london mayoral election and red kens gots some stiff competition from bobby boris picket sorry jhonson no i might have been right first time spot the corpse.

anyway heres the suns angle on the race to the london assembly.

The current mayor and Labour candidate Ken Livingston faces a run off with

Conservative Party’s Boris Johnson and Liberal Democrat Brian Paddick.

The marathon race is set to be hard fought before we find out who finishes on top of the podium.

The main three party political candidates all hope their pledges on crime, transport and the environment will win over Londoners.

Voters will go to the polls on May 1 and to help you decide who should cross the finish line first we have set out the main candidates’ key policies.

BORIS'S KEY PLEDGES

Provide £2.6million to fund hand-held scanners or new knife archways at transport hubs to hinder the mobility of those who carry knives and guns.

Lobby for an end to the stop and account form to cut down bureaucracy - this would mean that police could spend an extra 160,048 hours on the beat - the equivalent of adding 78 new officers to the force.

Provide funding for three new Rape Crisis Centres to help the forgotten victims of sexual violence

Support the Low Emission Zone to improve air quality.

Protect and preserve our beautiful open spaces by working with local councils to ensure they are safe and pristine.

Work with local councils to improve our record on recycling so that it becomes a natural part of all Londoners' lives.

Practice environmentally friendly measures to be adopted across the GLA family including: a ban on bottled water, a ban on internal flights, recycling, green procurement and sustainability.

Fight for a lasting legacy for London; the after-effects of the Olympics must be felt for decades.

Stand up for the London council taxpayer to ensure that they don't pay a penny more than they already do to fund the Games.

Battle against local hospital closures.

KEN'S PLAN FOR THE CAPITAL

Continue investing to transform London's transport system - continue improving bus services, modernise the Tube, build Crossrail and improve London rail services through London Overground to raise service and safety standards, while holding down fares.

Continue the six per cent reduction in crime each year - add a further 1,000 police over the next year to London's existing record police numbers and maintain a dedicated police team in every neighbourhood.

Safeguard the policy that 50 per cent of new homes should be cheaper homes to buy and homes at affordable rents; build a minimum fifty thousand new affordable homes in the next three years.

Introduce 24 hour operation of the Freedom Pass - giving older and disabled Londoners free travel before 9am and throughout the day.

Extend the student travel discount to Oyster One Day Travelcards; maintain free travel for under-18s on the buses.

A £25 a day charge for high carbon-emitting gas guzzlers to enter the central London congestion zone and no charge for the greenest cars, with a London-wide Low Emission Zone to keep the worst polluting lorries out of London.

Maintain good community relations - continue to reduce racist attacks, down more than fifty per cent over eight years.

Youth centres for our young people - a £78m programme to set up youth centres and improve youth services throughout London to provide safe facilities outside school hours.

BRIAN'S BID FOR LONDON

Chair the Metropolitan Police Authority to hold the Metropolitan Police Service to account for its performance in reducing crime.

Pledge to cut crime in London by 5 per cent every year during his first term - and if he doesn’t reach his target four years, he won’t stand again for Mayor.

Take real action to get guns and knives off our streets.

Improve London’s overcrowded public transport and increase the reliability of Tube and bus services.

Review how the Tube is managed, following the collapse of Metronet and Labour’s failed PPP project, and allow unlimited changes of bus within an hour for the price of one journey on an Oyster card.

Launched a London-wide rail survey to give rail users a chance to have their say on what needs to be done to improve the system.

Tackle the lack of affordable housing which keeps people off the housing ladder and contributes to congestion on the roads and overcrowding on public transport.

use money currently spent on temporary accommodation to build new permanent social housing. He would bring unoccupied properties into use and take over redundant land to create more housing without the need to build on London’s precious green spaces.

Brian will keep the Mayor’s contribution to the council tax down by cutting waste at City Hall to get better value for taxpayers’ money.

there is of course one other major candidate party missing the BNP but the sun doesnt report on the bnp,s policies its intrest is in the main 3 parties labour conservative and liberal.

the main thing i think stuffs ken is (quote) A £25 a day charge for high carbon-emitting gas guzzlers to enter the central London congestion zone and no charge for the greenest cars, with a London-wide Low Emission Zone to keep the worst polluting lorries out of London.

this wont go down too well with shop and car owners who are the main part of kens voters and is just a stealth tax a labour speciality so ken has shot himself in the foot there.

as for bobby boris jhonson there is no real serious offer on the table just a slight difference on the other twos policies quote Lobby for an end to the stop and account form to cut down bureaucracy - this would mean that police could spend an extra 160,048 hours on the beat - the equivalent of adding 78 new officers to the force.

what about recruiting 78 real people not paper figures that mean nothing.

and we must not forget the sheep yes the lib dems.

and for once they have something real to offer listen to this quote.

.

now thats what i call weilding the big stick.

the only let down is the Pledge to cut crime in London by 5 per cent every year during his first term - and if he doesn’t reach his target four years, he won’t stand again for Mayor.

this means about as much as a **** in the river thames.

if i can find out what the bnp,s policies are i will post them for further discussion.

who do you think londoners should elect ?

Why not elect Bertie Ahern, we have had enough of him over here, it would certainly confuse all the right people, and if he fails to perform, through him in the Thames, we don't mind, in facta we'd pay you. :wah:
