RSPCA Please tell the relevance of this ad

FB, they were thinking to wake people up to the fact that people who abuse animals are more than likely to abuse their spouses and kids as well. People continue to fail to make this connection. Another thing this ad does is say to people "look, you may not care about animal abuse, but maybe you care about human abuse, so watch this!" Abuse is ugly as many of us know and no, it's not pleasant to watch but if makes one person see the light, then in my eyes, it's worth it. Sometimes you have to put it in peoples' faces.

morning fuzzy,

i watched a documentary some time ago about kids abusing animals, sadly most of it was filmed in the states where the shrinks (very sorry cant spell the other word for them ) said that if as kids they can do this sort of thing, they then go on to abuse their wives and kids and apparantly this has been proved in a lot of cases.

personally, i've not seen this particular advert, somehow i dont think it will appear on british screens.

Red so what your saying is, if this was a commercial about domestic violence then it should depict a man abusing a dog with a woman screaming in the background? and the caption should read "if you wouldn't do it to your wife why would you do it to your dog?

At the moment I'm just tossing it out there

Well, I suppose that's one way we could look at it. It's not a commercial encouraging men to beat their wives. Nobody expects to see a commercial as blatant as this, and from what I can see, the RSPCA is just trying to get people to make a connection. I'm not very familiar with the RSPCA, but I'm assuming it's the equivalent of the ASPCA which a lot of people don't know this, but they started out as a protection group against the abuse of New York City carriage horses and CHILDREN. They fought the abuse and mistreatment of children as well as animals. The link between animal cruelty and abuse against spouses and kids has been well documented. I think this commercial is great because it's upsetting or at least unnerving and *might* reach somebody. Maybe a housewife who is in that situation might see her life reflected in that and might get help for herself. Maybe (and this is a stretch) an abusive husband might see himself in that and get help to stop his abuse. I'm all for it myself.

ETA: It's not just spousal and child abuse either, children who hurt animals often abuse other kids as well. It's a cycle. And many serial killers started out torturing and killing pets and other animals. A direct link.

I know it sounds very callous of me but although I watched the advert I had to turn the sound off as the dog sounding as if it was being beat upset me too much!

My interpretation was, (although it's unacceptable to abuse another human) the woman in the ad can make the break and walk away, she has that ability to do so.

The dog on the other hand does'nt, it needs help and protection from agencies like the RSPCA.

I have to add that watching the advert did upset me but knowing they were actors made it easier.
