Why?
The GST in Canada makes its claim on vitamins and herbal suppliments. Where's the logic? The people who choose preventative health, thereby saving the healthcare system a number of dollars, can pay tax on their healthcare so that others who continue to feed the pharmaceutical industry can be subsidized?
vitamins are found in food. vitamins make up for nutritionally depleted food upon which we pay no tax because it's an essential item. Basically, the modern world separated food from its nutrients. We can buy the nutritionally poor bulk part of the food but have to pay tax to get the vitamins that were sucked out of it.

Tax On Vitamins
When the Mulroney government proposed the GST about twenty years ago, it was supposed to be a 10% sales tax on every thing and every service. Such staples as milk, eggs, bread, fruit, vegetables and meat were supposed to be taxed.
Almost immediately, they excluding most food items (except for snack items and restaurant meals), and reduced the tax to seven per cent.
This was a transparent attempt to placate the masses. The government had never intended a blanket ten per cent tax. It was all pretty patronising.
I think that dietary supplements and personal hygiene items should be GST free. It also annoys me that I have to pay tax on my natural gas bill. Heating your home is as vital as having food on your plate, yet most of that is tax free, and rightly so.
The mayor in our town has proposed a municipal sales tax on all fast food items purchased at those stupid drive-throughs. An endless stream of cars, idling away in line for a lousy coffee and doughnut.
I hope it passes.

Synchronicity or linked items? I don't know but this appeared in our papers the other day - might have a bearing on the decision to tax.

synchronicity, Bryn
I agree with richard about the personal hygiene items too. I wonder at the beauty of a protest full of women against tax on tampons and pads yelling "We'll stand and bleed until you concede!"
This seems to be a recurring topic for me :p
This one's for Nomad
