High School Success Story
I just found out that the high school I work for produced a player for the NBA.

So nice to find success stories from a district more famous for gangs, drugs, and violence.

That's very cool, Acc. I'm sure it is really nice to see something positive like that.
Hopefully it will have positive impact on some of the others.

He graduated long enough ago that my students might not know about him. I'm going to print everything I can find. Maybe have the class write him or something.

Isn't there any women who have progressed from that particular high school?
I become very afraid for children who only look at sporting stars as heros or "sport is how to get ahead in life" .
maybe getting more info on past students would be a good assignment for your students?
Maybe that's all there is.
Acc's school does not appear to be at the upper end of social achievement - that's why he's there and making such a difference.

You see I believe that's just an excuse. And it's a poor excuse and a rip off to children attending those schools. In fact, patting kids on the head and telling them they're from a poor socio-economic and therefore they don't have oportunities beyond sport is criminal on the part of those educators.
Not in the slightest, but neither would I set them to searching for the unfindable and rubbing their noses in the poo that way.
If it's taken Accountable until now to find one sporting ex-student I'd want to know there were more to find before setting it as an assignment.

I withdrew my eldest son from a school that was going down the drain. They got a new headmaster that completely turned the school around, The uniforms improved to give the students pride in themselves. They had more sporting community service oportunities . But the one thing that i didn't think would do much to help students was a hall of fame. Just past students who succeded beyond some of the difficulties they had. I now have my middle child in that school . So I do appreciate individuals who will do this.
But in saying that, a bit of digging into ex students wouldn't go astray. Just because the majority has not had opportunities doesn't mean a few got through to succeed in life.
A sociology assignment wouldn't be a bad thing.
Just a suggestion.
An excellent idea! Before I started this thread I checked for another web page that mentioned our school, hoping for a businessman, doctor, etc, but came up empty. It would be a good project for the students to go through the, say, 1998 yearbook and try to find them on the web. Finding even a local business owner would be a good start.

I think finding people that have graduated and have actually moved on to find paying jobs is a good start with my crew, Bryn. Several local business owners I've met are dropouts who started with nothing and created their success from their own sweat. Inspiring, yes, but not in showing the value of education.

I can see it now - "Drop out and you too could have a job like this" :wah:
Not quite the message you want to put across :-6

Not quite :yh_wink
One of my students' step-dad puts him to work in his transmission shop any time he gets in trouble. The boy looks at it like punishment, but he can drop and install transmissions with the best of 'em, and is learning how to rebuild them too! Considering the money skills like that bring in, I'd like to have that kind of punishment! :wah:
