Is this a stupid idea?
Depending on your hair - its not stupid..
I've frosted my own hair several times - have I learned ???? NOT without help
You can't frost your own hair if you have a full thick head of hair & the length ??. You'll regret the mess you make - looks like a grow out already - the cap slips as you pull more hair thru etc...
It'll work if you have a friend pull your hair thru
Now that works

i have done this for other peeps lots of times and all were happy with the results.
Make sure if you go ahead, you dont pull too much through for the first time.
Their are kits available where you can brush on the highlights to mimic a sunkissed look also.
Foils are the way the h/dresser does then thesedays, however they dont go straight to the root, the cap does a better job in that respect.
Oh yeah, the cap hurts like hell lol
I have gone off the streaks now and I use a semi colour which lasts around 20-25 washes in a chocolate brown by nicky clarke, it leaves my hair megga shiny every day, I do get lots of peeps commenting on how shiny it is and @ 7-99 its quite a cheap way of jazzing up yer hair.

How dark is your hair? Get a kit made just for your shade as if you are a dark brunette your hair may turn brassy instead of blonde. If you do that and take Patsy's advice and get a pal to help, you should be fine.

I'm one of those that takes weeks to just color my own hair after I buy the coloring kit, so I could only imagine me trying to frost my own hair.
I wouldn't be brave enough, I think Patsy has a great idea...I would get a friend to pull the hair through for you.
Good luck with which-ever you decide, we would love to see pics!!:-6

I would go with a semi-permanent if you are looking for a change. They aren't that expensive at all.

Frosting kits work great - buy LOREAL
1 box is plenty - it's all complete, and easy to do.
put your cap on - pull the hair thru the cap
mix solution - apply to head - wait directed time - rinse - wash - condition.
The longer the solution is kept on the lighter the color - so if you want blonde - real blonde, keep the soltion on a little longer. You can see the desired color.
Again depending on your hair - I wouldn't recommend the comb thru highlighter kits - they don't work unless your wanting alittle color @ your face - the solution clumps - comb is cheap - forget them..
It could be a fun day with a friend - frosting eachothers hair..
Go For It

Would it be inappropriate for me to say that worrying about frosting your hair when you have no income is rather stupid? :wah:

The Frost Kit comes with a hard plastic hook - and it does work well.
If you have a small - tiny doillie string hook avaiable as a back up cool, but really not necessary. Loreal " Frost & Glow "is the only Frost Kit that really color well.
Do Not Buy Clairol - your hair will be orange.
Koan
I don't see this as stupid - Just beacuse one can't afford a $90.00 hair coloring and has chose to use home color package which is affordable.???
I'm not sure what your trying to convey

Do they still make those paint-on kits? I like those much better than the cap and hook method because you can see better what you're doing and make it look more natural. Plus you just paint highlights onto the top of your hair with a tint brush (like a paintbrush) where the sun would normally do it, instead of putting highlights where the hair would normally be dark.
Keep in mind if you have hair that's all one length and you highlight it with a cap and hook, it will to some extent, look "striped." Frosting usually looks better on layered hair as it breaks up the stripiness.
Avoid this at all costs:

I hate these large streaks - yuk
Her Plastic Surgery is terrible too..
Sunset
When you pull the hair thru - take small amounts using every third hole in the cap.
so you don't end up with these large streaks
every third hole will give you nice highlights - small amounts..
Good Luck

That's the option I recommend. Not because of your income but because the chemical exposure every time you dye your hair is incredibly toxic. Beauty to die for? Not in my opinion.

Oh, please "Beauty to die for "
You were implying "no income - waste of money"
not toxic chemicals
For God's Sake - there's more toxic crap in our food compared to a frost kit & the possible toxins that enter our pours.. Please
This was a thread regarding frost kits - if you haven't tried one
then NO COMMENT - she'll have a plastic cap on ???
