Do you have any traditional Russian music in your collection? Especially Cossack dances and the like.



Next month is our big inter-club rally on the river and the theme for the entertainment is countries of the world - we, as hosts, have drawn Russia.

I've already got the national anthem (in Russian and English no less) for the intro and some tunes for the middle scenes but I'm looking for something exciting for the finale - it's slated as a bar scene with some impromptu Cossack dancing to close.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Politics and nationalism aside, the Russian national anthem is a stirring, majestic work.

Here's a site that has many variations on it, from the straight Red Army Chorus renditition, to Stan Kenton's 1962 jazz treatment, to Finland's Leningrad Cowboys fusing it with ZZ Top's "Gimme All Your Lovin'". There's even a reggae version :

It also has the old Czarist anthem (which was briefly revived after the collapse of the Soviet Union), but it's pretty anemiac compared to the Anthem Of Russia. Lots of other related music, too.

Some wonderful stuff there - I'm likely to use the 1943 English recording by Paul Robeson rather than the more usual one by the Alexandrov Soviet Army Ensemble.

In 2000, Guy Maddin made an amazing Eisenstein influenced short film called "Heart Of The World".

He used "Time, Forward!", a heart pounding composition by Georgy Siridov, previously used in a Soviet film of the same name in 1967.

Part of the same music was used for many years as the intro for the national TV newscast.

Amazing - quite unlike anything I've seen before and very impressive.
