Chinese Sick Leave: i No Come Work Today!!!

Post by jones jones »

Hung Chow calls into work and says, "Hey, I no come work today, I really sick. Got headache, stomach ache and legs hurt, I no come work."

The boss says, "You know something, Hung Chow, I really need you today. When I feel like this, I go to my wife and tell her to give me sex. That makes everything better and I go to work. You try that."

Two hours later Hung Chow calls again. "I do what you say and I feel great. I be at work soon.......You got nice house."

How can it possibly be called unracist, leaving aside the question of whether it carries humour or not. Cod accents are fairly central to racist humour. The alternative to mocking their accent is to depreciate their value or laugh when they drown - or, if you're Ann Winterton, do both.

I apologize on hoppy's behalf for the belittling of valerie's post, he goes beyond what's tolerable on this occasion.

You know, I can't think of a single nation on earth that's been remotely as antithetical toward China, for anything like as long, as Japan has been. Perhaps you asked the wrong sort of expert.

The accent thing didn't add to the humor & wan't necessary. It's not like it was an Irish joke involving golf, drinking, or funerals. I mean, it wasn't even clear if the business was a dry cleaners or a fish & chips place, for cryin' out loud.

I thought the joke was very funny, but I didn't get the ethnic element of it. It was completely unnecessary.

I'll tell the joke and pass it along, but without any sort of ethnic/racial stereotyping. Without that uncomfortable distraction, it's actually funnier.

It reminds me of my days at Lowe's, even tho I as a canadian seldom say "eh" at the end of a sentence, I was inundated with remarks claiming I did. Same with "aboot" as opposed to about. I don't mind being called a canuck, i'm proud of my country, and I don't mind jokes about canadians, what I did mind was that a select few could not get the word canadian out of their mouths without the "F" word preceeding it. As for the joke, it was funny although its been around since the wheel was invented, and I didn't find it racist in such a way that it demeaned the chinese, and after all, who got a little from the boss' wife. Now to me, that puts the chinese chap on top .. lol@ "on top" I crack me up! :) So let me try one and if it is racist I apologize now.

Two chinese gentlemen apply for a job in a lumber yard. The yard boss tells the first he is to measure all the sawn wood, and mark them as to how many feet long they are. To the other he says "I'm putting you in charge of supplies"". A few hours later the boss is out in the yard to see how the 2 new laborers are dewing. He finds the first one w/ a tape measure and crayon marking and measuring as he was told to dew. As he's walking around looking for the second chap he's startled by a quick movement. From on top of the lumber pile the second chinese chap jumps down in front of him and shouts at the top of his voice "SUPPLIES"!

with no more racial malice than telling an irish joke /english joke

i think its the intent that needs to be looked at and as far as i can see there was no racial slur/insult intended The intent in using the accent and the "funny" name, surely, is to isolate the speaker in the joke as being from a particular social class, or a particular country, or (preferably) both. Malice on the part of the teller is irrelevant - most of these "jokes" have currency in school playgrounds. I once heard the following in a school playground for example, I'd hate to think it was still being told there. "Rastus, where is you"? "I's hidin' in de coal cellar, Lisa", "Well open yo' eyes wider, I kin't see you". On what basis do you picture the people in the joke? The accent and the "funny" names are the only explicit clue. Nobody here believes I have any malicious intent in telling it. I do hope people find it completely unacceptable that it should still be told, regardless of my intent in telling it. Are you saying the Hung Chow joke shouldn't be told in playgrounds but that here among consenting non-Chinese adults it's fine? Or that the Rastus joke can be told anywhere? Or that the Chinese are thicker skinned than others?

The ethnic component of that joke was integral to the story. It wasn't in the OP joke, and that's the difference.

I think both jokes are funny. I don't find either one to be terribly offensive, but they certainly wouldn't meet PC standards. Probably get you in trouble around some workplace water coolers.

The problem really comes down to perpetuating stereotypes and

breaking down people's resistance to those type of jokes.

Try thinking of it this way: Instead of Chinese sick leave, insert

the "n word". With "appropriate" dialect. Would any of you tell that

joke then? Or laugh at it?

Telling those things with nobody speaking out against them makes

FG look bad, I think. I spoke out not only because it's the way I

really feel, but so any newbie who comes across it in six months or

something will see that not everybody sat idly buy.

Accountable said "Dang french canadians" actually, if they are french, it's canadiens, with an "e", but quite honestly I can only speak enuff french to get my face slapped. Come to think of it, that happens quite often when I speak english too :-2 :o I think what some may have overlooked in the OP was that the gent in question did not have a firm grasp on the english language and took things litterally, maybe new to the country. Not a racist slurr in my book. Sorta like me, I've been here 8 yrs and still can't figger out "All y'all youins" for the life of me. :-3 In fact, I'm beginning to notice you all have an accent! :p I just don't get the whole PC thing, I mean, yes it is wrong to insult a race, gender, us bald ppl altho I personally don't mind, and what about all the men jokes, we all dew it I'm sure. At one thyme anyone with a learning disability was labeled (for lack of a better term) reatarded. Then overnite it was noted it was unacceptable, so call them "mentally handicapped" To me its still lableing and how is one any less offensive to the other? If you really wanted to be PC, it would simply be John, Betty, or whatever. A label by any other term is still a label; is it not? JMO! :-2
