Hi Hoppy, just thought I would let you know that once you've posted something, and you find something you would like to change, you can just click on edit on that post and then redo whatever you want, saves you having to do another post that's all.

Then I read about how typically english your laws are regarding arms, self defense and the means. I even read that pepper spray is illegal over there. If you have nothing to offer in way of explanations, go put on your ruffled shirt and have a tea and crumpet.
Hoppy, at least half the attitude problems in this thread are coming from you. Unruffle you own feathers before mounting your high horse.

I've been saying every word of that for years.
Now stop prattling on about legalizing handgun ownership in the UK which isn't related to any of that in the slightest.
Hoppy, you haven't a clue about society on this side of the ocean. You were e-pals with someone who was murdered? That makes you an expert? You're still an uninformed fool who refuses to look into the facts. "I ask here about that sort of thing and get crap from some limey with an attitude problem"? Challenge what I've written if you want to, I can support it all. Better yet, go and read on the subject before you post more drivel.

Hmm. I've just had to exercise serious restraint. Are you trying to make enemies?

I don't give a flying crap about whether or not you limey's own anything that shoots. You are missing the whole point. I wanted info on self defense in your country. What's allowed, what's not, any weaponry allowed or not.
Obviously, you have no answers so you continue spouting BS in your lame attempt to make me look like a fool when it's apparent to all here that you are the fool. Time for my nip and a nap. Ta-ta, fool. LMFAO.

http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/showp ... stcount=51 is, just as I pointed out earlier, an entirely accurate summary of what's allowed and what's not. There's no limit in the slightest as to what weaponry might be employed, how could there be - how could case law cover such a question? The legal demand is that the force used isn't excessive given the degree of threat being faced. If the threat to a person or property is extreme and unavoidable then the force used can be extreme as well.

You're allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself. If you kill someone then it is up to he crown prosecution service in England and wales and the procurator fiscal in Scotland to decide if prosecution is warranted. If you go to trial it will be a jury trial
We have a jury trial system whereby the guilt or innocence is decided by a jury of your peers (as in equals not of the realm). The rationale being that they are in the best position to decide if the action you took was reasonable in the circumstances. If the killing was in self defence or by accident in defending yourself then it is unlikely that you will go to jail. Do a search on the internet if you want statistics it is not a secret. If found guilty the judge hands down the sentence, you are innocent until proven guilty. You cannot be held in prison without being brought to trial and it is not the government that decides you guilt or innocence or determines the length of sentence although they do lay down guidelines.
It is not a perfect system but one of the reasons it came about was to curb the arbitrary power of rulers or the government to imprison people on a whim. It is a system much copied throughout the world including believe in the states.
Our police historically are unarmed as they were basically conceived as ordinary citizens in uniform with slightly more powers of arrest than a private individual. The intention was to ensure they were not seen not as an arm of the state used for repression. You will not (unlike in the US) see armed police being used to put down demonstrations or deal with riots-although they will no doubt be around if needed. Nor will you see anything like the national guard being used to control demonstrators. I remember the Kent State shootings and being amazed that any free country would tolerate troops being used that way.
Historically our army has always been small except in wartime-even at the height of empire most of it was abroad-so it is not big enough and arguably not suitable as a means of repression.
Our culture is very different from yours-basically (and this is not aimed at any american reading this) anyone that thinks he needs a gun in case they are attacked is regarded as being mentally unstable and exactly the kind of individual who should not get one.
We do not have armed security guards anywhere. there are no private armies such as blackwater in the US nor would we tolerate them.
We have no reason to fear our government because we elect them. They are afraid of us but every now and them forget they need to be and we vote them out. We have a parliamentary democracy. It wasn't the government that banned hand guns to deprive us of the right to bear arms it was the government banned hand guns because they were **** scared about what would happen if they ignored public sentiment. After the Dunblane shootings anyone in that area objecting to the hand gun ban was in severe danger of being lynched.
We do have a problem with violent crime and gun crime is on the rise in some areas. What we don't have is depressed teenagers with ready access to machine guns opening fire at their school.
The two country's are very different cultures when it comes to guns. Comparing the two is pointless. The idea that we have been deprived of our right to own guns and are repressed as a consequence is ludicrous. The comparison will get you nowhere. If you want to be free make sure you can control your government, if you need guns to protect yourself from it maybe you are not succeeding.
You all seem terrified of your neighbour and want guns to protect yourself.
Let me put it this way. I live in a country where if a policeman stops me he needs a good reason to do so and an even better one to arrest me. I don't have to worry about him shooting me because he is hyped with fear in case I have a gun and panics if i make a wrong move. If someone cuts me up in traffic or I get involved in a road rage incident I don't have to worry they might have a gun and be unstable enough to use it.
I hear police sirens all the time-last week i saw the police box in and force a car to stop on the M9. You see the police in action all the time-Not once have I ever heard gunshots. Our society isn't perfect but forget the image put out by the NRA of a terrified populace unable to defend themselves because the big bad government won't let us have a gun. It's a load of cobblers.
What i find really annoying about it is the assumption behind it that our government just does what it likes and we just put up with it. That too is bollocks.

You know, I've seen this reaction by Americans before. RJ comes out with it every time he loses the plot in just the same way. It's this desperate notion that saying a thing is all that's needed to make it true, it's the Hollywood effect, it's how the US U-571 recovered an Enigma machine for example. It starts out fiction but, once it's said, the speaker's in Disney Heaven where the truth's whatever he wants it to be. It's why there are more campaign medals for Operation Urgent Fury than people deployed, though how the Grenada fantasy can be considered an honourable engagement baffles me. It's how people can pretend that Pat Tillman wasn't fragged at close range with a tight group of three rounds and that really it was an ambush by nasty foreigners. Fingers in the ears, shout it loud and it's suddenly a universal truth, mere evidence is irrelevant.
