racial double standards

Post by RedGlitter »

Great question Jimbo.

It's been put to me before that it's time "we" paid our dues. "We" meaning us white people. This is usually in relation to blacks and latinos. I don't get it either and I agree it's a form of reverse racism. Or if you take out reverse as the qualifier, it's just plain racism.

Tar and feather me for it but I still laugh at ethnic jokes. Well not all of them, I don't like the meanspirited ones but like the latino comics are my favorites. They make fun of their culture and that makes me laugh. There's a lot of humorous stuff in every culture, including white culture. I think we should all be able to poke fun at each other as long as we also poke fun at ourselves.

I think it's all about political correctness. It started out with good intentions- don't hurt people's feelings. But then it snowballed into this big mess andnow everyone's super sensitive because PC tells them they're being insulted. That's my take on it.

so why do people really try to make other people feel bad for laughing at jokes that in all honestly there is very little if any racial slur intended

is it a kind of reverse racism even that you can be victimised for being white and telling a joke but if your black/chinese or other race its ok

now before every one starts jumping on the white power band wagon i myself am of mixed race so dont even go there with the burning cross stuff

is there any chance of any one without getting nasty explaining to me why its ok

i mean i have seen people treat other people awfully bordering totally cruelty beyond belief then use the race card to start start a fight as if they care about every ones human rights all of a sudden :rolleyes:

Let's take a stab at this one.

Firstly, the legal disclaimer - this is not my opinion, it is my attempt to explain the opinion of others.

Try an analogy - if you see a child hitting out at an adult then you laugh, no harm being done and the child is learning. If you see the adult hitting the child then you're up in arms and quite rightly so.

Back to the jokes. The ethnic minorities have been the underdogs and have been put down for so long that for a white man to make a joke of them is continuing the oppression. In contrast, for them to make a joke at a white man's expense is helping to teach them that they can be equal.

That, as I understand it, is the theory. The ultra PC brigade take it further and say that any racist joke is totally unacceptable, the KKK say we can take the p!ss but heaven help them if they even think it - my, I laugh if the joke's funny and cringe when it's hurtful.

I dont have a racial bone in my body.......I like all people and if a jokes funny its funny, dont matter what colour or creed. I do not take these jokes seriously, and therefore am mature enough to distinguish between reality and what's a stupid joke. I have never taken a preference toward one race or the other, so therefore I laugh at all jokes about all races, not just aimed at one.

No one race is any better than the other.

RG, i AGREE 100% Political correctness has gone mad. I work with a black lady from Jamaica and she has a cracking sense of humour and like me laughs if she finds the joke funny, she isnt laughing at the race's expense. My sister inlaw is Japanese and she pokes fun of herself and her fellowmen all the time....Sense of humour...Im half Irish and live in Wales.......I get welsh jokes all the time, like being called lamb chop and welsh burd and sheep lover I laugh at all the time cos their not true just an insight into your culture. Welsh are well known for rearing good sheep and producing lovely Lamb, so we get called sheep *haggers but are we? do we, the welsh people just do that, if we do at all......Of course not. Irish are laughed at for being a little thick or just for eating potatoes and having names like murphy and paddy, come on.....surely people can see through this as just being a **** take and not being racist.

People are getting totally anal on the PC and I aint joining. I would never ever intentionally hurt somebodies feelings and if I ever have with a blonde, irish, scottish, welsh, french, german, american, animal , big boobs, bald men , fat, thin, white, black.....joke then im sorry.

I detest the cruel jokes that get banded about, but again these jokes have no boundries and any race is up for the picking.

Dont say brainstorming in a meeting incase you upset or insult the mentally ill.

Dont ask for manilla envelopes incase the word reminds some people of the slave trade bangles called manilla's.

Can't say bedlam.............reference's to England's first lunatic asylum.

Dutch courage may imply that the dutch only have courage after a drink so dont utter that.

Perhaps the most unusual banned word by the WDA is maverick. Samuel Maverick was a 19th-century Texas rancher who was famous for not branding his cattle. The WDA ( welsh development agency) says this could offend people from countries where a cow is considered a holy animal.

Funny thing is.

There may not be an American alive which isn't of mixed race.

I have Irish (potato heads). German (no I'm not a Nazi), Indian(arrow shooters not red dot on the head) and maybe just a tinge of hillbilly (on my mothers side).:wah:

Perhaps it's a sign of a truly integrated society to be able to make jokes about the colour of someone's skin and all it means is the same as to refer to someone else's mop of blond hair reflecting the sun (when you are brunette)?
The crowd: "Yes! We are all individuals!"

Lone voice: "I'm not."

When I tell or hear a joke about a black, jew, polock, blonde, mexican etc. (there's welsh jokes? haha) it's of good nature and never intended to be racial.........but I'm guessing the rule of thumb would be if one is uncomfortable telling a joke amongst the nationality/religion/color of a person that the joke is about, then it shouldn't be told at all.............now I'm not one to follow that rule, but it's a thought.
