Please click on the link below to confirm that you wish the Number 10 website to display the petition at the bottom of this email in your name.

Your petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to increase the

tax on petrol and diesel by 20p per litre.

Even with fuel now topping £1 a litre it is still, sadly, not

yet prohibitive for the man in the street to drive. With the

continued and increasing waste of fossil hydrocarbons, a

fundamental and irreplaceable raw material for manufacturing,

by treating it as mere fuel to be burned while it lasts, it is

imperative that the Government act now to bring fuel to a

reasonable price at which this waste stops. Adding a gratuitous

20p per litre to all hydrocarbon fuels will encourage industry

to find alternative energy sources for transport, heating and

power. We understand that this cost will decrease the personal

spending power which is so essential to a consumer-driven

economy, perhaps the additional proceeds could be added to the

annual state pension bill.

Thank you for submitting your petition.

Its a nice idea, but I don't think its possible, we have a supply problem, but also a huge demand level, and subsidizing the fuel will only make the pain even harder later on. They will have to take oil of the commodities market and start sharing it out in quotas at some stage, as the price is just going to keep escalating over the medium- and long-term, whatever happens short term.

That said the price of fuel in the UK is very high, much higher than in the Republic, and we think ours is high. But I have to reiterate, that if you think its bad now, its not going to get any better, in fact its only going one way, unless they find Saudi style reserves somewhere in the Atlantic that we haven't looked before (under Rockall perhaps?). I know that you might find spots point about fuel annoying, but in reality he is right, we won't be able to afford to use oil as a fuel for that much longer, we may already be hitting peak oil, and we should have been trying to develop a way to get out of our total dependence on oil a long time ago, that we did not is now going to come back to haunt us all unfortunately.

Don't you just hate it when people are so informal? Hi??

So, I can't have mine because there are others already saying what I said.

I'm delighted.

The other petition so far has 34 signatures, one of which reads "you sir are an idiot or communist or probably both" and another "For God's sake, will somebody please think of the children!". Both laudable sentiments, no doubt. Hurrah for democracy in action.
