How old were you when you finally felt like an adult?
At 40.
The day my mother died.
I knew it instantly.

At first thought i would say 19, when i got married , had a job and taking care of my own household for the first time.
but as a farm girl, it's like what you said Jester, we become adults much earlier.
i know i can't remember a time when i didn't realize that we had certain responsibilities if the farm was gonna be successful, and you didn't question why you had to work, it was just part of life that certain things had to be done. i can remember helping with the harvesting of the tobacco as young as 5 years old.
but i guess i first really felt like an adult at 17 when my daddy died, that shifted a lot of the responsibility onto me, since my mom kinda phased out there for a while and didn't take much interest in anything.

I think a person feels like an adult many times through early life. With me, I felt adult-like when Big brother Ike taught me to ride a bicycle at age 5. And later to drive his Ford 'A' and the tractors. And when dad entrusted me with changing oil and doing lube jobs on the machinery. And when I got my first very own shotgun. And when I got away with being in a bar with Ike. And my first sex act with Rosie T--, a well known town gal.

Kinda crept up on me, when my dad walked out and I helped mum with my younger brothers.I was only 8 at the time.
Then when I was 11 and she tried to kill herself my dad was there but couldn't cope with the situation so he just handed me her suicide note and said 'look after her' then he left. I knew I had to be 'grown up' and take charge.
Then when I was 17 and my son was born and I was sure. This was it, when you are responsible for creating a child caring for that child and teaching it you have to be an adult.

So the responsibility hit you? is that what I hear you saying?
Thanks Jester. Yes, that's what I am saying. The responsibility of having to take care of all the things she normally would have. That "shift" you speak of, for me, I actually felt it happen. It was the sudden feeling that everything my mom had been, at the moment she crossed over, I then was. My job to hold up her legacy. My job to carry myself as a newly motherless child. Kind of hard to explain I guess.

I guess it was the level of responsibility, that suddenly went up for me, when i had to start taking care of the business of the family farm at the age of 17. that's what made me feel like an adult i think!

Do we ever grow up completely? I don't think so. We learn to take responsibility and all the things an adult does. But inside, we grow up some, and in some ways we never do. I was 16 years old when I went surfing with the local Moondoggies this week, and I frankly want to feel that way inside all the time. :-6

:wah: I get my come uppances tomorrow, when I have to see the doctor for getting too much water in my old ears while surfing. It is kind of nice not having to hear the TV that's on right now......:wah:
But it was worth it, I will wear ear plugs next time. But I will not be able to hear the TKD master telling me stuff tonight, I think I will be doing push ups as a consequence......:wah:

Adulthood=Maturity
Becoming a responsible and loving parent to my own children did that to me. But, now that my children have grown up and are out on their own, I am still mature and responsible, but sometimes I can feel like a little kid. :wah:

I am about to turn 65 and I haven't felt that way yet and hope I never do. Mind over matter.
