Brush With Death

How many of you have ever had a really close call, if things had been just a little different you would probably be dead?

Jacob and i had one this evening and i'm pretty well shook up!

It was a stupid thing to do, and i'm still kicking myself, but we were having a thunderstorm but the thunder didn't seem that close at the moment, and Jacob loves to see it rain, so we went out on the porch!

we were sitting out on the porch watching the rain and suddenly a lightening bolt flashs right over our head, it made a popping sound in the porch light right above the door, the noise was so loud and the flash so bright that it blinded me for a second and i had a headache for a good while after.

Naturely my first reaction was to grab Jacob up and run into the house, then after we got inside, i got to thinking, we could have just been killed!

Has anybody else ever had a brush with death?

I'm assuming that you hadn't went back outside to investigate...

I wouldn't necessarily call any experience I've been through a brush with death...I have been in a select few automobile accidents that can unarguably be considered an automobile accident capable of killing anyone whom was inside...

To this day I get infuriated with people who drive recklessly...I literally see the ignorance spewing out of their brain...

no believe me i haven't gone back outside, and i'm still kicking myself for going in the first place!

I have however taken a step down to the pavement of the grand stands at a local racetrack here to see a Legends car fly into the fence ten feet in front of me do a full 360 plus another 180 only to land upside down and burst into flames...

Luckily I hadn't dropped my coke!!!...(No I'm just joking)...

The driver ended up sustaining a degree of 3rd degree burns and a significant amount of 2nd degree burns throughout his body but was relatively ok in that regard...Well...As ok as anyone could be given the circumstances...

Geeze Hope...that's awful. Did you know that lightening can be 10 miles away and still strike you

Glad that you're both ok. I'm crazy also....sometimes we have bolts of lightening at the beach...it's beautiful to look at. But, I sit in a car....not so sure if that's totally safe:wah:

The only near death that I've had was from another driver's road rage..thought he was going to kille me:mad:

Now this following 'story' is perfectly true, but is so amazing, it is difficult to believe ! When you've read it perhaps you have had a similar experience, or you may know somebody who has, well maybe you could tell us about it.

Many years ago I used to play electric guitar and sing in a band, playing at gigs in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. One night we had a gig at Stamford in Lincolnshire which finished at midnight, so by the time we'd packed all our gear into our cars and changed from our stage clothes it was nearly 1.00 am before I set off home. It was a really foul night weather wise, the Heavens had opened and the rain was like a tropical monsoon. I came out of Stamford and got onto the A1 northbound, there was nobody else in the car. I turned off the A1 onto the A52 at Grantham and travelled towards Nottingham. At this point a terrific thunderstorm had developed, and there was so much lightning that the darkness of the night was turned into constant daylight. The rain was still torrential and my speed was no more than 35 mph, it just wasn't safe to go any faster. I thought ' well I ain't going to get home till nearer 2.30 am at this rate ' so i settled down for a slow drive home. The whole spectacle of the storm was truly amazing. There was very little traffic on the road which was a relief, but, as the road was swimming with water, I was gripping the wheel fairly strongly just in case I hit a disguised puddle and it tried to pull my wheels. I had just gone through a village called Elston and was running down a long straight piece of road. The lightining was flashing constantly still and the thunder was dreadfully loud, and I was glad there was no traffic and no headlights to add to my problems. Suddenly there was an indescribably bright flash immediately to my left with an instantaneous huge crash of thunder - 'God that was close !' . My steering wheel never moved an inch and my grip on the wheel was still just as strong. To my horror I was driving on the wrong side of the road ! Thank God there was nothing coming the other way ! I steered back to the correct side of the road, and my knees started knocking - how the hell did that happen? A moment later an articulated lorry came round the curve at the bottom of this straight and headed towards me - if he'd been 10 secs earlier, there would have been a head-on and instant stopping at a closing speed of 75-80 mph doesn't leave much of a car or the occupant when it hits a lorry!

I was told later on that it is possible for a lightning strike as close as that must have been to my car would be quite capable of pushing a moving solid object sideways particularly as the surface of the road gave no resistance due to the water on it. What a terrifying thought! We're all told that lightning doesn't strike a moving object, and in any case when you are in a vehicle you are insulated by the tyres. But, it seems, you are not totally safe when you are driving in a thunderstorm, so just be alert and cut your speed right down.

i know sweetheart, it was stupid but i thought the thunder was far enough away, but i was wrong. and as you may know our AC is messed up at the moment and it was so hot in the house and so cool outside since it had been raining.

what can i say i'm a dumbass and i'm feeling very guilty right now!:-5

I can't stand driving in thunderstorms and the rain when it comes down in buckets, etc. I just pull over to the side of the road and let it pass. I have precious cargo in the back seat.:-4

My X wife has (yet) a habit of looking at you while she talks to you. 70MPH down the road, her driving, yapping and looking at me the whole time. And she had the gall to ask why I drank so much. Drunk was the only way I could ride with her.

There isn't much thunder and lightning in San Diego so I don't worry about it much. Glad your OK Hope6.

At my age you have more then your share of brushes with death. :wah:

Two of the bigs one in my life are these. One I don't remember (was told to me by my younger sister in the operating room).

1. I broke my neck in 1987 of course they did surgery to hopefully help me regain the use of my upper body (which it did). Back then the were just starting to go through the front of your neck to get to the discs in your cervical spine. It was the thinking it caused less scar tissue in the long run. Well as I was told by my little sister in the OR (they let her in, it was an emergency). It seems they could stop me from bleeding and I was very close to death. I didn't know I was out, but was told by my sister the minute my eyes opened and there she was standing by my side in the OR. I of course said to her how the hell did you get in here.. :p

2. I still see vividly in my mind on occocasion. I was coming home from a friends house with my young daughter in the back of my 1973 Camaro, I only had it a year and it was a very cool car. We were in the fast lane and thats what saved us from what would have been a fatal crash for us both. All of the sudden I hear this awful sound off to the right side of my car and a couple cars in front of us in the second lane have just slammed into each other. There was a guy on a motorcycle that was in front of me. One of the cars in the second lane all of the sudden came flying across two lanes right in front of the motorcycle guy. He began to lay the bike down, I try my very best not to kill the guy as the car flys past us and drives up the embankment (a grassy hill very steep) car goes right to the top and starts to roll back down. By this time there is complete chaos on the road. The motorcycle guy is going down in front of me. I'm literally screaming at my daughter to stay down in the backseat and cover her head, when I see a sliver of road right up against the embankment that I try with all my strength to move into. I litterally go sideways to cut into it and drive my car for at least a mile till I can bring it to a stop. I'm shaking, my daughter is shaking but we are alive. We get out of the car and move backwards away from it for fear of someone slamming into it. I look back and all the cars are stopped and the motorcycle guy is down, hurt big time but alive. Somehow the car that went up the embankment missed us and 2 other cars and rested backwards at the bottom of the embankment. If not for the power of my 350 V8 engine I would have never been able to do what I did. I litteraly avoided driving over the down motorcycle guy which would have most likely killed us all. To this day I still keep in touch with the motorcycle guy he thought I was the best damn women driver he has ever know, or ever will know. Oh I still have the Car will never get rid of it I still drive it to this day original owner. :driving:

it's great that you still keep in touch with that guy, it sounds like you are a great driver period, a lot of men probably couldn't do what you did!

WOW !! You told that like you was going thur it as you wrote it,, what I mean is it was told so realistic that it seemd i could hear and see what you were describing ,,thank goodness you are still here to telll the experence,,

in 2002 at around 4pm I was comming back from town and about 4 car links from my gate I had a blow out ( tires still had 40,000 miles on the warrenty) any way my little ranger pick up rolled ove onto the top scid over 20 feet slammed into a hill flipped end over end back onto the tires and I flew out the back window taking glass frame and all with me .wound up laying in the bed with my fee 'propped upout cold in the hole where the window had been I was ,, liad there over a hour before someone came along (town is 15 miles East of my place ) I was flown to Albuquerque 75 miles away woke up in the emergency room at 11pm got off the gurrney signed a AMA paper called my son and was home by 3am . I have never before or sinse had any kind of wreck miner or otherwise.

Wow so many incidents... glad you all cheated death.... I honestly can't compare. I think I felt it when I was bucked from my horse many years ago and landed right on my head. We were galloping up a fairly steep hill and up over the top came another horse straight onto us, a random horse I suspect loose from the near by indian reserve and it spooked both me and my horse and I did not have time to react proper and my horse reared up and veered left and I flew off right and onto my head. I laid in a heap fearing he would come down upon me but I hurt so bad I couldn't move immediately. Thankfully he missed me, but it sure took me an awful long time to get up. Fortunately nothing broke.

I think having a live animal involved in a situation makes it very scary, did your horse stick around till you were able to get up or did it run back to the barn and leave you walking ?

i've always thought i had a guardian angel watching over me!

ever since i was 2 years old and we came from church one day and my daddy always wore a tie, i decided i wanted to wear a tie too, so i got his belt and put it around my neck, the problem was it tightened up around my neck and i couldn't get it off, and i was suffocating. Just then right at that moment, daddy just happened to walk by the door and see me in the bedroom struggling with the thing, and ran in and got it off me!

thank goodness he just happened to walk by that door when he did!

Yes mam, thank goodness your daddy walked by at that moment,,has that sort of thing always happened to you , not self inflicted ,as a 2 year old that was the act of a baby being a copy cat to daddy ,not anything more or less, and the lighting tonite was nothing more than act of mother nature,no one knows where lighting will strike and as you said the storm had passed enough on away from your place , I'm sure u would not have been out there if you had any idea it was dangerous ,

When I was a kid in grade school, we were out in our boat and the weather turned bad fast. Stupidly, we were stuck out in the basin and our boat was getting tossed around. Water was filling it. I crawled under a seat and promised God if he'd let us not die, I would always be nice to Duane B. (A kid in school I could not stand and picked on mercilessly.) It took a good half hour on full throttle to "fight" the water and get back to shore and I have been kind to Duane B for the last 30 years.

I don't know how serious that was, looking back, but to a child it was pretty scary.



A few years back my mom and I were on our way to Reno for a pet conference and some jerk came about three feet of hitting us head on. My mom was an excellent driver and always a quick thinker and we hit the dirt. Had I been driving, I've no doubt we'd have been dead.

well one car accident that was within a few inches of being a head-on crash and a couple of other near misses with other cars, and a couple of close calls with a snake or two! and some crazy target shooters shooting bullets that hit the wall right above my head one time!

I wanted to ask if your guardian angel has been busy keeping a watch over you but just could'nt find the right words with out sounding wierd,, but yes it would seem you have up close and personal experence with c brushes of death ,,are close brushes like that somrthing that 'runs' in your family or do they seem to just be following you ?buy 'run in the family' I know 2 brothers that have had more close brushes then any 10 people have had and their mom says her grandpa was the same way...

my mom has always talked about her guardian angel and that she has had some close calls too, but not so much anyone else in the family.

It would be intresting to know what if any research has been done as to why some folks have so many very close brushes with dangerouse experences while other folks don't,,

I had a great uncle that always seemed to be the one in the wrong place at the wrong time like if we were working cows he would be standing in the gate we needed to put the cows thur or when cleaning out a water well it was hiim that was always getting smacked with the block and tackle or while working up on a windmill tower it would be uncle Maurice that would drop the tools or the the mill would almost knock him off the tower,,

I am not compareing his goofs to your near misses in any way but this thread brang him to mind because it seemed like some kind of energy or something was attrcted or followed him more then anyone else.



Thank goodness that what ever it is that causes these things is counter balenced by a protective 'guardian angel ' so they remain as scary as it sounds to me close brushes L&L

well i've had plenty of those kinda of goofs too, i can't even count anymore how many times i've sprained my ankles and i had a cow to kick a gate i was holding a couple of years ago and it flew back and hit me in the head, i had to go to the emergency room!



my momma who is a very very religious woman would say the devil is after you, tyring to cause trouble for good people amd that the guardian angel is God's way of giving you a helping hand!

well whenever we would see very many snakes around she used to always say snakes were a sign the devil is after you!

but no she never said that to me about any of my little accidents,

i always just thought i was clumsy.

but actually we've been pretty lucky i think, there's a family who is neighbors of ours who for about 3 or 4 generations now have had 1 or 2 of them killed in car accidents. it's almost like the're cursed or something!

Oh ok, I was just wondering what would make your momma say that I would say you have been a bit more than just "pretty lucky " IMO that is an understatment and your guardian angel is doing a heck of a good job with protecting you,,

yeah and a lot of people don't realize is that everybody has guardian angels, but from what i've always been taught, they don't come to you automatically, you don't get them until you ask for them! so a lot of these people who seem to have bad things happening all the time, it may be because they haven't asked for theres yet!

On the same note I know someone who's hit the lottery twice...

A very big lottery both times...
