Twenty Thousand Americans

Post by AussiePam »

Twenty thousand Americans are amongs the zillions of pilgrims milling around Sydney harbour and environs as the Pope visits these antipodean shores for World Youth Day 2008. The ferries are full, the beaches are full, the streets are full. Young people clad in the flags of their countries are dancing with the Aboriginal corroborree folk on Circular Quay, being photographed with Aussie cops, singing, having a ball. I ran into a bunch of Canadian nuns in Hyde Park, about a hundred kids from Michigan in the history museum, the Poles were all heading for the zoo. The train was full of Germans.

The weather is perfect. Bright warm sunshine in the middle of winter.

Pilgrims are being billeted everywhere - including in the local muslim school - this must give one hope!!!!

Anyway - welcome to Sydney!!!!

How very festive, it sounds wonderful. What does the Pope charge to put in an appearance at an event, he sounds well worth booking!

No idea, Spot, but I know it's costing us an arm and a leg to make sure noone takes him out. He will zot across the waters of Sydney Harbour tomorrow afternoon.. in a specially constructed popemobileboat. And yes, the jokes about walking on the water have already been cartooned to death..

The city is very festive right now, as well as mega crowded. And everyone seems to be having a ball.

I understand that the Pope is to make a first Aussie Saint - Mary McKillop. And the 'shrine' or whatever just happens to be at the end of my street here -so it's a bit hard getting in and out right now. The streets will be completely shut for the big pilgrimage on I think Saturday.

There is some musical worship session on in Darling Harbour. It's amplified to rock concert level and the sound is bouncing off my windows and off all the North Sydney office buildings, echoing about, broken only by the screaming buzz of news and security helicopters. Happy days!! The Pope himself is still resting up at an Opus Dei retreat in the bush and doesn't appear until tomorrow.

I don't know the answer to your question, Fuzzy. I'm agin all this kind of thing in theory but the kids seem to be having a very fine time, and they're a nice lot.
