The Southern State Diet

Post by QUINNSCOMMENTARY »

A new report from the CDC says that one quarter of Americans are obese with the higher rates in Mississippi and the lowest in Colorado. Actually, the good old south topped the list with Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee the top three.

Can one conclude that (relatively) clean air and hiking all those mountains keep a person slimmer while the more rural more black states have the opposite impact (and yes, black Americans have higher rates of obesity)? Does education have anything to do with it? Do they eat more Bison and less biscuits and gravy in Colorado?

So what is obese, it takes a quite a heft to meet the requirement. For example, if you are 5’ 9 you have to weight 203 pounds to have a Body Mass Index of 30, the point at which you are obese rather than simply overweight.

And more good news, the CDC thinks these stats are conservative because people tend to report themselves being taller than they really are. This tends to confirm my theory that the problem is not people being overweight, but rather undertall.

It’s clear that Americans are not ashamed of their condition, just look around the mall, better still how about the beach?

Well they say muscle is heavier than fat. Let's hope the muscle holds when he is 45.

Yup, ar suthen skules'r teachin' blacks how to be fat. It's the only skill they seem to be able t' lern.

How 'bout it's just good down home cookin' stickin' to our ribs? How about that?

As far as genetics, African and original American body types are more efficient at storing food. It just hasn't been naturally selected out yet. Not likely to be any time soon, either.

Blacks in africa eat more fresh and less processed foods and get more activity either in work or everyday activity. Blacks in the US are more sedentary and eat processed foods regularly...

Same with americans: original types ate fresh foods much less processed and had much more activity, today we eat more processed foods and get much less.

Help me out with your genetics comment I'm not understanding?
Right. They're geared over hundreds of generations for hunter-gatherer behavior. Over here they have more than plenty, but the body type is still the same. Putting a formula-1 car on the streets and driving 35 doesn't change the fact that it's still a formula-1.

Im not buying the hunter-gatherer part and the hundreds of generations but I do believe you are right about basic shape. Both my son and I are big fellas, if I ate processed food all the time and sat on my hiney and did nothing I'd be a really big FAT fella...
Yeh, but there are also those that sit around all day eating whatever they want, and stay stick thin. I'll try to find some studies.

when i moved from IN. to LA. cajun country. First, they are not a veggie culter. other then onions, celery, and peppers. Everything is with rice. Even with other starches.Plus the base of their flavor is burnt flour in lard. Which is called a ROUX. When you think of Stew. It is meat,(Chicken, pork, or beef) not lean either. No potatos or carrots. Just greasy meat, the three basic cajun veggies and rice. Cracklins, which is fried pork fat and skin. not like in the bag either. GREASY. Now they do cook with tomatos too. but along with all the lard too. A dish they usely start their childern on is grits floating in butter. or rice and gravy. lots of health problems here. The cancer rate is very high too. i believe in part it is because of the eating habits here. Everything is very rich and fatty.

I was wrong, generally, for Americans. LINK

This study has some data comparing white and black American's BMI. I've summarized it below, for the benefit of people looking for this type of data.

....................Male ...............Female

...............BMI.....% fat.........BMI.....% fat

Black.......26.9....22.9%......28.1....24.8%

White......26.5....23.0%......36.0....30.0%

This study found no difference in men, Black or White. Although Black women are heavier, their ratio of fat to BMI is similar. Actually, this study found a slight difference between black women and white women, but only when their BMI is less than 25. No big deal.

This graph of Body Fat percentage versus Body Mass Index, shows that women's fat percentage is higher than mens. The curving data trendlines shown below look similar to other studies of body fat versus BMI.

I think women should have a little curve in their trendline. :sneaky:

Look how easily I fell into the color-coding crap, though. Among Africans you'll find many different body styles, bone structures, etc etc etc just like with Asians or Europeans.

I do remember reading about fat density and digestion efficiency, though. Possibly among the Eskimo.

Them skinny folks that yer talkin about they usually have some body part movin, toe tappin, leg jumpin, eyes darting around, its the can't sit still type, is it the cant sit still part that is genetic, or the ability to use souluable fat from food better than other folks can?

i had a high school friend 88lbs. at graduation. oh, while we ate our salids or celery sticks. she would eat french fries and ice cream. but not anymore she has the middle age spread too.:)

A few years back the Chicken Little types didn't have enough obese people to complain about, so they changed the definition. Now we have lots. :-5
