A Tribe Of Indians Wanted To Kill Me
A Tribe Of Indians Wanted To Kill Me
While up north in bear country this weekend I had business on the White Earth Ojibwe Indian Reservation.
Clearly I was an unwelcome guest.
I had a tribal police escort.
Sort of.
I followed him through the reservation, which is enormous by the way (13,000 acres) for so few that appear to live there.
Well, not as enormous as the rest of the country we looted from them but many many acres none the less.
Its very beautiful with glass lakes and large pines touching the waters edge. Still except for the squack of the occasional loon.
Its beautiful as long as you dont look to hard at the squallor these people live in. Not all of them, but many.
The village I was in is called Naytawaush.
As the ociffer pointed to the direction I should take to find the Littlewolf household, he said good luck, laughed and disappeared.
It was almost dark and although my senses were heightened and sharp I wasnt afraid.
It's a scary place though. I drove 45 minutes through dense woodlands to get to this small village and I dont know what I expected as I stood on a strangers doorstep, but I didnt expect to hear a bellowing voice coming from some unknown source that "all white people should be shot, every ****ing last one of them"
That would probably be the point that I thought it was ok to be nervous.
Nothing adverse happened and as I was leaving the way I came now in the pitch black of night I remember thinking...these used to be such a proud people. We took that from them. We killed them.

No. We didn't. They (as in a general group) have chosen to martyr themselves and carry on hating white people even in this modern day, rather than rise above it and better themselves and their condition. It's the easy and familiar way so it's comfortable. I live near the Mojaves and we get that same static. They don't hide their hatred either, they are forthright about it.
And I'm glad you're okay. That's a pretty sunset.

Nomad,
Did you ride there and back the same night.....Wow, I'd be scared that I'd meet a bear in the dark and be his dinner....
You truly are a brave man as I've always suspected:wah:
I love stories about the Native Americans.....love their spirit and prayers.

I'd say they have ample reason to be bitter. The small number of people still there may be evidence that most have gotten control of it and moved on.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Nomad. We did not kill them, but we certainly nearly destroyed their old traditions. The Cherokee nation in North Carolina are trying to teach their young the language of the Cherokee. They rename the neighborhood streets to include both English and Cherokee. Many of the bill boards along the highway have both English and Cherokee words on them.
Sadly, the glory of the old Native American culture is gone. But there seems to be a hope that there is will be a glory in the modern Native American culture.

I was worried about hitting deer, I had to brake several times. They just shoot out into the road.
Ive seen pictures of a buck that came right through the windshield of a Dodge Ram and landed on the seat.

It was just a drunken neighbor. The children were soft spoken and beautiful and everyone else was polite, if not nervous.
I got lots of stares though. People would stop what they were doing as I drove by.
I felt like I was trampling on sacred ground. Like I had no right being there.
But when they seek to the outside world for tangible things and dont honor their commitment theyre no different than anyone else so......

Red, I swear sometimes you need to count ten before typing. Yeh I know, I need the same advice.
Not at all. I mean what I say whether it's popular or not. Show me a people that don't have some kind of discontent in their past. Should women hate men because of the horrible ways they've treated us since millenia? Should blacks continue to hate whites? Jews for Germans? This "good for them" mentality only encourages this pathetic chip on their shoulder and allows them to continue blaming everyone but themselves fo rthe positions they are in.
Nomad I'm sorry only for derailing your thread, not for making you ill if in fact that was directed at me. I will now leave your thread but i do not apologize for what I have said.

Wow...That's only 500 acres less than the lake I went to over the weekend...
St. Mary lake...At one time it was the largest man made lake in the world...Individual people hand shoveled it in the early 1800's for $0.37 a day and a "jigger" of whiskey...
It was interesting...Great place...Good fishing...

How cool that you went there, Nomad. My one professor is Ojibwe, she is a very lovely lady.
Makes me curious, you must have been on official private eye stuff-some things are protected on an Indian reservation, I understand why the tribal police escorted you.
Besides the obvious.................:wah:
They still are a noble people, Nomad. If you ever want to read up on them let me know, my bookshelves have quite a few books on them.

Ah, that book is powerful. You do not have to tell me, Nomad. It is what I write about all the time.
There are some new insights into the Ojibwe past being written today, a new one on a look at women and their role in tribal society during the late 1800s.

I don't believe so...If I'm not mistaken it was made to create a canal as it sits between many Ohio rivers and serves as a great influx for fish...It's also constructed on an area known to produce oil...There's still one producing oil rig that's left...
I found this excerpt...
The area in and around Grand lake St. Marys State Park played an important part in the development of the Northwest territory. The St. Marys River served as a vital link between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. Because of this heavy water traffic, the renegades Simon and James Girty established a trading post, which eventually evolved into the town of St. Marys. General “Mad” Anthony Wayne passed through the area in 1794 during this march to drive out the Shawnee, which culminated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Some of Wayne's men returned here to make their homes.
In 1837, work commenced on a reservoir for the Miami-Erie canal to maintain the canal’s five-foot water depth. Workers using hand tools were paid 35 cents a day and a jigger of whiskey to keep malaria away. At its completion in 1845, 13,500-acre Grand Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. The lake was connected to the canal by a three-mile feeder.
The canal prospered until the coming of the railroads in the 1870s. The area experienced another boom in the late 1890s when oil was discovered. For a time the lake was dotted with oil derricks. Today a pile of rocks near the center of the lake marks the spot of the last producing well.
Grand Lake St. Marys and other canal feeder lakes in the state were the first areas to be dedicated as Ohio state parks in 1949.

Yes, the land is sovereign. That remains an issue the federal government continues to chip away at their rights, given them under treaties that continue to be ignored.
They do not get the amount of money the average person seems to think. When the original claims were made for the land, the government in the 1950s and 1960s paid them about 50 cents an acre for their land. Pretty cheap, huh? And they were forced or get nothing for it, ever.

It puzzles me. They could have such beautiful lives living on the land the way they were. There is an abundance of the deer Nomad had to avoid hitting and fish in the beautiful lake. Why do they seek after the material way of life claiming they don't get enough of it? I don't understand.

It is the catch 22, of trying to live the way they once were, wanting the things that others have. There is no easy solution, because they must live in both worlds now.
A Tribe Of Indians Wanted To Kill Me
If America hadn't been inhabited by outsiders when it was and by those who did it, would it have remained as it was? Would the expanding world around it have left it alone so the natives could live thier lives untouched by the rest of the world? Would no one have ever insisted they experience diversity?

It's the same as the black communities back in the day. They bought into the hype that the white way was not better, but that it was the only good way. Grass is greener & all that.

Oh cool! A chance to plug the book I'm reading. You guys have got to read it if this kind of stuff interests you (the forced diversity stuff, not the killing Nomad stuff). It's a Pulitzer Prize winner, Guns Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, by Jared Diamond.
The guy's a geography and physiology professor that melded information from many disciplines such as history, botany, biology, etc to answer questions such as Why did the Spanish sail to the Americas and conquer the Incas instead of the other way around. Fascinating stuff. Explains why Native Americans had no killer germs to wipe out visiting Europeans. Fascinating stuff!

Am I saying that there weren't wrongs being/been constituted by each of the sides?...No...Am I saying that there were rights to the "white pioneers" that eventually became the United States of America of the side?...Yes...Am I saying the "white pioneers" that eventually became the United States of America could have went about their business a little better and morally?...Yes...
