Should we drill offshore, should we drill in Alaska, should we be concerend about the supply of oil at all?
Let's see, we already drill in Alaska and that oil comes into the lower 48 as a result, right? Wrong!
A significant portion of the oil now coming from the ground in Alaska goes to Japan, in other words we export it.
How can that be you say, we need more oil and yet we export some of what we have within our own country.
Yep and the reason is that we don't have refineries to use the oil we have so it is exported. No new refineries in 30 years in the US (kind of like maintaining our infratructure don't you think). Talk about a national enregy policy.
Why no new refineries, Not in My Back Yard. :-5:-5:-5

I don't think it much matters really...
We need an alternative fuel source and need it now...Plain and simple...

That may be true, but unfortunately it is not simple. Plus it will be even more difficult if the price of gasoline drops over the next year as it may well do because the urgency will be lost.
It is at least ten years away that there is any viable alternative to generating a major portion of our electricity let alone fueling our vehicles.
We incent ethanol and what happens, farmers divert crops for that purpose instead of planting more corn and we contribute to rising food prices.
Wind power? Ok, a good direction perhaps but not a solution because what do you do on those days when there is no wind (and it does happen)? Are you willing to go dark every so often and rely on windpower alone? You need back up and how do you generate that electricity, natural gas most likely or coal, but more of it should be nuclear if you want a clean fuel. Rememeber you can't store electricity it must be used the second it is generated. And how do you get wind generated electricity from middle America to the coasts where it is needed? First you need new transmission lines that take years to build, if you can get over all the regulatory hurdles and who is going to pay for it if you do?
Electric cars, ok another good idea, but years away from anything that will let you drive at highway speed for more than say 50 miles and on top of that you need to generate the electricity to recharge them.
No one answer, no simple solution and years away from both, years. The problem is like health care in America, politicians have been talking about a national strategy for more than 20 years and nothing has happened. Why is that?
Simply because Americans (at least up to now) didn't really care and were very happy to ignore the problem. Politicians and Americans in general are incapable of long term strategic thinking or planning.
Do you care now?

To Drill or Not to Drill
i think CA. coast and FLA. coast should be explored first. with being the wife of a oil field employee. we have discussed this many times. but the PreZ. has lifted the band. which really was a joke. because now the congress will play around for heaven knows how long. The oil off the coast of LA, MISS, ALA and TX will not live forever. the plantforms my husband works on are dying slowly. the yeild is much less now. (NaT.gas) The same with oil. i know other methods have to be found. but for the time being. at this rate. it could as long as 5 to 10 years away.

Yes but surely this would increase the amount of jobs related to the disinigration of oil...As for it equaling out I wouldn't know...But one thing's for sure,..it's a very real possibility...

Well,..I'm thinking public transportation would most certainly need to be emphasized upon any real venturing into alternative energy sources...And would at the same time cut out Mr. John Doe from all of his coveted Florida trips...
Sophisticated public transportation regimes and a whole alot of bicycles...:wah:...

I wouldn't consider "incapable of long term strategic thinking or planning" one in the same with business ethics...I associate the lack of innovation and research or the lack thereof with simple greed...The American people are just the commodities...

That seems rather convoluted as the key to increased profits is innovation and research...if you can sell the new product that results. Electric cars would be crowding the streets if people would buy them. Forget the oil companies, they may want to stretch the oil cash cow for decades, but others will have no trouble with innovation if they can make a profit.

That's the entire point...Oil is their short term solution to sustaining the profits they so desire...They hadn't even bothered with research that paves the way for innovation because the simple fact of the matter is is that they've been making far too much money off of oil...At the same time knowing that alternative fuel solutions would never meet up with the affordability of gasoline...
On a side note,..I think electric cars would/will be a bad idea...Not only would they be unreliable but far worse would be the market competing for higher profits rendering cars far underweight leading to far more deadlier crashes...Lets face it,..an electric car would be more efficient the less it weighed, and you know if your average businessman could do that they probably would...I don't give them the benefit of the doubt...Not when money's involved...There would need to be stern laws in place before an electric car would be safe to drive which would ultimately spell more power needed to run conveniently...
