What's Wrong With Being Left-handed?

As you can probably guess by the title of this thread, i happen to be left-handed!

it's always bothered me a little how people are by you when you're a lefty!

everytime i have to write anything in front of someone, they are gonna make some comment about me being left-handed! not to mention that everything is made for right-handed people, it can get frustrating!

my mom is left handed too, her brother-in-law saw her writing something once and said, "you're left-handed! i always knew there was something wrong with you, i just didn't know what!":-5

i mentioned to my sister-in-law that i think Jacob is gonna be left-handed too, the look of horror on her face was priceless! :wah: she said OH NO! but then she caught herself and didn't say anymore, i guess she remembered that i'm left-handed too! :-5

so i've done a little reseach on us leftys, here are a few facts for any of you who are left-handed or have family that is, this may be interesting!

First, Some Left-Handed Statistics

About 10% of the world’s population is left-handed.

About 66% of American presidents in the last 30 years were left-handed men. Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Fold were all left-handed presidents. Barack Obama and John McCain are both left-handed.

Quick thinkers. Studies have shown that lefties are “exceptional. Australian research shows that left-handed people think more quickly when playing computer games or sports. Left-handed people also tend to earn more money.

Personality Traits of Lefties

Independence: Some experts believe left-handed people are more independent because they’ve had to get along in a world that’s not made for them. lefties are “slightly more resistant to social pressures, and have more of an independent streak.

Adaptability: Canadian research shows that left-handed people are more adaptable than right-handed people. That is, a lefty can use her right hand to do tasks much easier than a righty can use his hand. Left-handed people seem to be able to switch over more easily.

Generally, Southpaws are thought to be more flexible, highly intelligent, and more resilient than right-handed people.

Interesting Facts

left-handed folks tend to be male which means that left-handed females are truly a minority. Wow i truly am unique then! :wah::wah:

There is a high tendency in twins for one to be left-handed

Left-handers excel particularly in tennis, baseball, swimming and fencing

Southpaws who have made an impact on the world have been brains, celebrities, artists, presidents, professional athletes, etc Michelangelo, Einstein and Ben Franklin are historical left handers. Bill Gates, Bill Clinton and even Oprah are current famous lefties.

My oldest son is a natural born lefty , he tells folks that say anything about his being a lefty that , "you know left handed people think with the right part of their brains "

we are told the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and visa versa .... he's always been just to

My husbands left handed

and yes, everytime he signs something - there's the remark.

He's very intelligent - & I call him "Mr. trivia "

I read once that the ratio of introverts to extroverts is about the same as left-handed to right-handed. There are many more extroverts than introverts but I don't think there is a connection. I'm right-handed and slightly introverted.

My daughter is left handed. The teachers had no knowledge of how to alter their lessons on printing and writing to accommodate her and marked her poorly on her messiness seeing it as her failing and not their own.

People tend to think they're being funny when they make comments like that.They dont realize a person's sensitivity to these things can go way back. Then there are perceived "slights" when none were actually made. If these off comments bother you, I think you should tell them.

I have a cousin, who happens to be probably one of the coolest people I know in this world....and she's a lefty, I guess because I love her for who she is and she jokes about lefty's being "special" in a good way, I don't think much about it....I remember when I was a kid, I thought it was kind of weird....but as an adult, I admire people that can write with their left hand, because I clearly CAN'T!! My uncle can write with both....talent stopped in my family with me!!

Wow...How incredibly arrogant and rude...

People tend to be afraid of what they don't understand...I don't see any reason as to why anyone would think left handed people are inferior other than they can't help but to empathize only to realize how God aweful they are with their left hand when it comes to coordination...

The Romans used to enter their homes, carrying their newly wedded wife, with their right foot first because they considered it to be a bad omen if they "enter/ed on the wrong foot" derived from "Put your best foot forward" ultimately comprised from the knowledge that most people tend to be right handed hence why you hear the phrases "Put your best foot forwards" and "Get off on the right foot"...

They also believed getting up on the right side of the bed prevented bad omens as well hence why you hear "To get up on the wrong side of the bed"...

They also tossed salt over their left shoulder with their right hand from which was vehemently stressed to do so with your right hand so as to please the Gods...Salt in Roman times was considered one of the most luxurious commodities back then and to spill it meant bad luck as well as giving a few grains of it to the "Gods" would have pleased them considering salt was coveted so much...

MY OH is a lefty at primary school back in the 1960's they made him keep his left hand behind his back and write with his right hand. His handwriting is awful (he uses his left hand) as a result of this idiotic behaviour.

But when it comes to building he 'see's' things in 3 dimension before its even built knows how and where the joints and stuff should be its weird but fantastic .

He got a job as a welder once just walked in and said give me a test. They gave him a really difficult corner that right hand welders would have to cross the torch over their body to reach, he went along right handed and then in the corner switched to his left!

Of course he got the job.

My daughter is left handed too, we knew that at about 3 months when reaching for her bottle rattle ect it was always her left hand she reached with.

Luckily things at schools have progressed and she was offered special fountain pens ( the nib is different?) extra desk room so she could angle her books ect ect.

I've grown up playing American football, basketball, baseball, and hockey and am predominantly right-handed...I never really practiced "switch hitting" but was still relatively good batting left-handed...During every other aspect of any sport that I've ever played I've always been predominantly right-handed...

However, when I shoot pool, or billiards, I shoot left-handed...It's incredibly weird to me that I cannot shoot with my right hand...I feel awkward when I try and shoot billiards right-handed...But being predominantly right-handed in practically ever other aspect of my life I find this to be sort of weird...It also enables me to sort of get a perspective of left-handedness..

I'm pretty good at billiards...Significantly good...

Well,..when I played...I haven't played consistently for over a year...Billiards is one of those sports where if at all you refrain from practice your game, or lack thereof, undoubtedly shows...

i never expected this much of a response to the thread, y'all are so sweet!

i've always thought of myself as unique by being left-handed, maybe a little special, i've always liked being a lefty and i've learned to live with all the comments!

i really like that we are supposed to be independent, i need to draw on more of that from myself!

but i was lucky that i don't twist my hand around when i write like most leftys, i turn my paper crooked instead!:wah: that was all that saved me in school i think, i went to school with a boy who was a lefty and held his hand really crooked when he wrote and the teacher made him change and start writing right-handed! i don't know if it had anything to do with it, but he was never able to learn well, he always had trouble in school!

I am strongly left handed and yes, at school they tried to force me to write and eat right handed and then complained when the result was less than successful.

Nowadays the biggest problem I have is using scissors - I guess I should get some left handed scissors but I've never managed it.

Did you know the Latin for a lefties is sinister and that right handed is dexterous?

yeah i've always wanted left-handed scissors too, but have never gotten any, i can do some things pretty good right-handed, and using scissors is one of them!
