I am quite fond of Greek Souvlaki with small pieces of grilled lamb or pork, onions, green peppers etc. on Pita Bread

I'll go with the ouzo and nuts too. I find that if a region has no dishes that interest you, check out the booze. All countries have SOMETHING that redeems them.

Filth hounds of Hades! What on earth is a gyro! Has the transatlantic divide reached such proportions that we don't even share the same menu vocabulary any longer?

I know Greek food though. I've seen kebabs. The word "gyro" means, to me, a form of inter-bank money transfer, a mechanism for either retaining three-directional stability in rocketry applications or for dead-reckoning navigation, possibly a microlight one-man powered aircraft - it has no food connotation of which I'm aware. Which aspect of Greek cuisine is this gyro of which the thread speaks?
