I have two Minature Pinschers and I talk to them all the time. It's become scary because they now seem to know what I'm saying :wah:

This just means you've bonded with the Alfster, Jimbo.

I could be wrong but I think most of not all "dog people" (and cat people too) talk to their companions. And that's what Alfie is...he's your furry companion. :-6

I think you're both lucky to have each other.

A Tribute to Dogs

"A dog is the only thing on earth that will love you more than you love yourself." ...Josh Billings
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion, gentle hands, and kindly words. Make us to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Albert Schweitzer

]he best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its' clouds upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and ]poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master, as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its' journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger to fight his enemies; and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its' embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

Wizard's Note: I have had the above piece for years, but never knew the exact origin of it until recently. It is attributed to Senator George Graham Vest during the 1870 Burden v. Hornsby court case in Warrensburg, Missouri. Sen. Vest's oratory (Above is only a portion of Sen. Vest's speech; the latter half of it has been lost to history.) won the case of Charles Burden, whose favorite dog, Old Drum, had wandered onto the property of Burden's neighbor, Leonidas Hornsby. Hornsby made good his promise to shoot the first dog that wandered onto his property; that dog being Old Drum. He did this even though he had previously hunted with the dog and acknowledged him as one of the best hunters he'd ever seen.

Burden sued Hornsby for damages. Following several appeals, the case reached the Supreme Court of the State of Missouri. Burden received an award of $50.00 in damages for the loss of his canine. The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce and dog-lovers around the country had erected a statue of Old Drum on the lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse lawn in Warrensburg on September 23, 1958. It is said that this speech provided the origin of the phrase, "A man's best friend is his dog."

Yep I talk to Scrappy all the time, even get him to choose which flavour food he wants by setting the cans down on the kitchen floor and asking him which one. Which ever one gets two sniffs is that nights dinner.

I love my dog and love chatting to him, if my kids ring the house from say grandma's they will ask me to put Scrappy on the phone....heh heh:D:-4

Always, just like they are people. I always give my big boy the first choice of rawhides, and I ask him which one he wants...he always picks the left hand. I talk to my turtles quite a bit too. :):-6

Jim we have a German Shepherd - alpha male. We rescued him when he was 8 years old, he is now 11 1/2 goin on 4 ! He communicates with us with his body language, and he knows that nodding his head means 'yes' !! He has learnt human language amazingly, and even in ordinary conversation between one of us humans, he can pick out certain 'important' words. Yes I talk to him and discuss things because he takes an interest in what I am saying ! For instance the other day I was just talking to Rex (our dog) about getting some more groceries and chatting on to him, then I mentioned that I would have to remember to get some more milk. He immediately turns towards the fridge and looks up at the door, then looks at me, then looks at his dish on the floor, then looks back up to the fridge door.

So I move over to the fridge and take hold of the handle, he nods his head madly and ears pricked and eyes sparkling, starts fidgeting his front paws. I open the door and retrieve the bottle of milk, many more nods, then he sits down looking expectantly at his dish, then at the bottle, then at me and nods again. So I pour a little milk into his dish, he waits to get the 'OK', and laps it up enthusiastically. Yes I talk to my dog all the time ! Because I know he understands what I am saying !!

:D ;)

Oh yes, I talk to Bodee all the time. We usually discuss his big floppy ears. :D

I get onto Blue like I do the kids. If he makes a mess eating his dinner, I tell him to clean it up. And he's just like the kids, doesn't listen. :wah:

We don't have a dog, but our daughter does. (A Westie named Simon) And she always talks to him as her son, (treats him as good as one too) & calls us grandma & granpa to him. We always bring him doggie treats whenever we visit, (or he visits us with his mother) so he is always happy to see us. He talks (barks) to us all, to let any one of us know when he needs to go outside to take care of business. He barks & goes over to his dish when he's hungry. (she always has water out) He barks when our Son in law (scolding) talks too loud to our granddaughter, he seems to understand everything, it's amazing! When we call our daughter on the phone, & she says here talk to "Simon", & she puts the phone to his ear we do, & she says his ears perk up, & then he eventually wimper barks. "Simon" seems part human. :)

He ate better, didn't work, pay taxes, worry 'bout nothin, could drink outa puddles an' not git sick, had a fur coat in winter, could run faster, swim better, pee in public an' not git arrested, was dressed right for every occasion------
