We haven't done this in a while.

How to: to capture your desktop, while you're looking at it, press the PrtScr (Print Screen) key on your keyboard, paste it into a program like Paint, save it and upload it here like any other attachment. :)

Abbey- I don't know why you don't have that key. I thought it was standard. Can anyone help??

Carol- where are you stuck? Do you have Paint on your computer? (There may be other ways of doing this, but this is the one I have always used.) If you have it, it should be in the start menu under "Accessories?"

Pressing the Print Screen key takes a snapshot of the desktop. Click! All that graphical information - whatever you see - is saved as a graphics image in the Windows Clipboard. You can then paste the image into any program that can swallow graphical images, such as Windows Paint or Microsoft Word.

follow these steps:

1. Press the Print Screen key.

2. Start the Windows Paint program.

Find it on the Start panel by choosing Programs --> Accessories --> Paint.

3. Choose Edit --> Paste in the Paint program.

The desktop image is pasted into the Paint program, ready for editing, saving to disk, or hard drive or printing and framing.

4. Once happy with your pic fo to File--> save as--> save on hard drive.

5. Just use manage attachments here or you could upload it to photobucket to share else where, emails ect.

To print the image after it's been pasted, simply use the program's File --> Print command.

On some keyboards, the Print Screen key is labeled PrtSc.

Excellent thread, RedGlitter!

There are a number of methods for taking screenshots, captures or screen dumps, depending on what device you are using.

Mac OS X and Classic:

1) Command-Shift-3 takes a screenshot of the entire screen.

2) Command-Shift-4 takes a screenshot of a chosen area of the screen.

By pressing the Spacebar afterwards, you can choose a window on the screen to individually take screenshots of. You can save these images to the desktop or to a clipboard.

3) You can also use the Grab application to take screenshots.

4) A shell utility called Screencapture (located here: /usr/sbin/screencapture) can be used from the Terminal application or in shell scripts to capture screenshots and can then be saved to a file.

Microsoft Windows:

I believe Chezzie already covered this one for most folks.

By default, Microsoft Windows does not save the screenshot to an image file; you have to paste the image into a separate imaging program (eg. Paint, Photoshop...).

Windows Vista has a utility called Snipping Tool. This is a screen-capture tool, that allows users to take screenshots of windows, rectangular areas, or a free-form area. Snips can then be annotated, saved as an image file, HTML page...

You can also use GDI, DirectX or the Windows Media Encoder API to capture the screen.

There are also a number of third-party programs available that will allow you to take screenshots with advanced functionality. Irfan View, GIMP, Xnview, TurboDemo... are a few software programs that come to mind.

Just be careful not to post sensitive information when doing this, though. I hope this helps.
