i used to use norton. a couple of years ago, they bloated up the software so much that it started really affecting my machine's performance. it's a common complaint now that it just goes 'bonkers'. i highly recommend AVG antivirus. they have a free version for personal use that is virtually the same as their paid version. they don't delay signature updates to the free users at all - same protection. i've been using it about a year now, and it works flawlessly, with no noticeable effect on my machine's overall performance.
they also have a paid version, and it's inexpensive - it's a two year license.

while i'm at it, i also highly recommend the Sygate Personal Firewall - it's also 100% free, and works exceedingly well.

oh, and if you do install AVG, you'll want to ensure that norton has been completely wiped from your system. norton has a habit of leaving all kinds of junk all over your machine even after doing an "uninstall". it's good to run a registry cleaner to make sure all the crap's been removed.

I had exactly the same problem BC, i found i had to shut down windows completely,
when i switched it back on went back into Norton & it allowed me to turn it back on again.
It must be a common fault with Norton, what's annoying is,
its so ruddy expensive to buy you'd think they'd have probs like this ironed out! :-5
