Were you overprotected?
In light of the did you grow up too quick thread. Were you overprotected as a child or young adult?
Did you have many restrictions placed on you that you found unfair?
Do you think now as an adult that your parents were right in doing so or at least understand why?
What impact has overprotection had on you?

I grew up way to quickly..i dont remember having any rules..i spent most of my free time babysitting to make money or at a friends house so i could feel loved..i was my mom's confident and friend. (something i look back and see how wrong it was) i became the adult before i was finished being a child. I never asked permission..i just simply said..mom, i am doing so and so..and she always said ok. because nobody censored my comings and goings i felt abandoned in a way..this backlashed on me because i became sticter on myself than probably what my parents would have. i was afraid to test or stretch my limits(ie; get in trouble because i realized there just wasnt anybody around to stop me) I was around fifteen the first time i clearly remember my mother ever telling me i couldnt do someting..i was so dumbfounded..that it sticks in my mind to this day. of course it wasnt her idea, i had a stepfather that thought i should be reigned in..basically put in my place..i was way to old at that point for it to work..
(a day late and a dollar short comes to mind here)

I couldn't say overprotected, I was free to roam where I would and I would be out exploring for hours, but I had a very safe childhood.
Wherever I was, running round the village or walking over the moors or exploring the riverbank I always knew I would be looked after - there was always someone if I needed them (even if I didn't think so at the time).
An example?
I was on the bus home from school, aged six (normal bus, not a school bus) and I'd decided to jump off early to go explore a village half way home. Just my bad luck the ticket inspector should make one of his infrequent visits. Sez he "why the fourpenny ticket - you need a sixpenny one", sez I "but I'm going to explore xxxx", sez he "do your parents know", sez I "no, I just want to go there". "Oh no you don't" sez he and made sure I got off at the right stop to go home. Me much disappointed but undoubtedly in less trouble than I would have been - never tried it again.

My parents were generally over-protective of me. Understandably so, considering. However, I was granted some freedom for being mature for my age and very responsible. I'm very much aware of what effect it may have had on my development, however.

I wonder wich is worse , being overprotected or neglected. i might have tried my limits. and did alot of stuff growing up if i thought anybody would have stopped me..like it was,,i knew no matter what i did..by the time anybody noticed they wouldnt have been able to stop me..and for some reason that scared me into not taking chances or being stupid..

I grew up as a kid during WW 2, when parents told us kids on summer mornings to be sure and be home before dark. We would be gone all day, to the park, riding our bikes, playing games, taking a lunch with us, no adult supervision. Riding buses to the movies on Saturdays (7, 8, 9, 10 years old), no adult supervision.
My daughter was 20 years old before she ever rode on a bus let alone go to the movies with other young kids without supervision. It's different times.

Same for me Lon I grew up right after WWII. We came home when it was dinner time in the summer. During school months we did our homework then went outside and came home for dinner. My parents never saw us except to feed us.
