well ..... did they find the higgs ???
CERN only ran packets round their rings at idling speeds yesterday, they've not pushed up to high power collisions yet. What they proved is that their pipes were clear of obstructions and had the expected bends at the right places. And that all their magnets worked. Black holes, if any, will be nearer Christmas. The Higgs Particle, if it exists, will be next summer.

I say we get the pitchforks, those crazy scientitsts as messing with laws of man and god (and Palin).
But in a more rational reponse, what Spot said is entirely accurate. Its all very exciting, hopefully the elusive Higgs Boson (or "The God Particle" as some more romatic physicists call it) will be found in its native habitat deep in darkest nucleonia.
PS. I am a biosystems engineer and a chemist not a god damn particle physicist Jim.

So I take it you're not particularly partial to particle physicists?:D

Nah, the only hole is in the theory and dark matter / dark energy are the fiddle factors needed to plug it.

I'm not sure they're a fudge, they've observational evidence at a galactic scale this last year. It surprised me.

Tell me more - I've not heard.
I cannot think of any observational evidence that would directly prove that dark matter exists - evidence that more real matter than they thought exists maybe but if they can observe it then it isn't dark matter.
Evidence that the gravitational forces accurately match the values predicted by the current theory but that only shows that the fiddle factors are effective - same for energy patterns matching theory.
Any links would be much appreciated.

Well, one on his or her own is fine, its when they start to congregate, thats when the problems start.

I can see where a pack of particle physicists could put you into a particularly problematic predicament.
