The Southern Cruisers Riding Club (SCRC) is holding their annual "Helms/Beels Ride for the Cure" run in Napoleon, Ohio on Saturday, August 6.
This is a huge event, growing every year. Tim Beels was a friend of Bullet's who was taken very young by cancer. Sam Helms was also a cancer victim.
Every year this run takes place as a memorial to these two men, and all the proceeds are donated to cancer research.
This is my first run of this size, and I am proud as hell to be taking part in such a great cause.
Anyone near Napoleon Ohio? How cool would it be to meet some FG friends on the same day?

The bikers in our area do soooo much charity work. Thanks BR for riding for cancer research. If you are ever in NM - mi casa es su casa.

They do several Poker Runs here - and then at Christmas time - I put together a Toy Drive for the Kids Cancer Hospital.. It is so cool..They also do the Toys For Tots thing - but they never get tired of riding for a cause! The community here loves when they ride through town..they go on over 35 streets - to all the nursing homes and elderly housing....All the old people come out and clap and laugh...Main Street shuts down for them...I sure wish I was going to be in Ohio - then..How far are you from Cleveland....The funny thing is - my brother that lives out there may be there..I want to call him..He has a bike and so does his wife...They are crazy crazy people - a lot of fun though...

Good luck and have fun!

Well, that was a hell of a day.
14 hours on the bikes, 340 miles total, there, back and the run itself.
While I was not there for the final tally, last count of cash raised for St. Jude's Children's Hospital was in the neighborhood of $13,000 on this ride alone.
Funny story on the way down: (Seems there's ALWAYS an unforgettable thing that happens on these rides.) As soon as we crossed into Ohio, Bullet took his helmet off, while riding. He had it between his thighs, as we were on country roads and not going real fast. I was on his right, slightly behind. A semi truck came from the opposite direction creating a huge rush of wind that picked his helmet right off his lap and flung it into the air, between us. I saw it go up, (it hadn't registered just what that thing flying towards me was yet...) and heard Bullet yell "Duck!!", which I did. The next instant I heard it hit the road behind us and turned to see what the hell it was. There goes his lid, bouncing merrily down the blacktop, careening off bikes as they swerve to miss it. I pull off, so he can turn back and pick it up, and everyone falls in behind me on the shoulder. We are making the usual disparaging remarks about Bullet's brain capacity while he fetches his bucket. It had rolled off the road into a corn field, and while he was in there fishing around for it, he decided he better take the opportunity and take a potty break. He waters the cornfield and comes out a minute later, helmet intact, (and scarred up quite nicely) and an ear of un-shucked corn between his teeth. Helmet goes into saddle bag, big, bald biker gets back on scoot. He drove past the group, waving like a dufus, ear of corn in his teeth like some shaven, over-grown bull-dog with a chew-toy. Funniest damn thing I'd ever seen.
I've got more to tell you all; it was a great day, but I am road-grimey, grit-blind and just plain whooped. Hope you all had a great Saturday, this biker is hittin' the rack.
