School Board Changes Yearbook Policy After Lesbian Photos Published

Thursday, September 25, 2008

CLOVIS, N.M. — The Clovis board of education will have final say on content in student publications under a new policy adopted about four months after the high school yearbook published pictures of lesbian couples.

The board voted 3-2 to pass the new publications code Tuesday. The code also gives school principals authority to review students' work before publication.

Clovis Municipal School District Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm said the school district's previous publications code did not allow principals to review student publications.

She said the need for such a review surfaced after community groups criticized last year's edition of the high school yearbook, the Plainsman, for photographs of lesbian couples in a segment about relationships.

Under the code, students can appeal a decision regarding content. The board of education will have the final say in the appeals process.

Board member Lora Harlan voted against the measure because she said she wanted to be sure the code did not conflict with state statutes.

Photos of two lesbian couples, along with narratives describing their relationships, were included in a features section titled "Do you want to go out?" Also pictured on the two-page spread were nine heterosexual couples.

It's hard to come to grips with the fact that our kids' world is not our world.

Nobody in our house cares if your gay or lesbian. It is just not a big deal. I think the younger generation could care less.

It's a minor issue with some kids at my school, but mostly nobody notices.

They really don't I think care. I don't. My cousin is gay and I love him no matter what. And I really don't see what the ruckus about gays/lesbians getting married is about. Let them get married. Who gives a crap?

my kids have described kids they knew at school as gay or lesbian since the fifth grade or so..not as a putdown..but because they just knew..the kids they spoke of were open about it..we do live in a different time now. and maybe thats better..i would much rather see people be honest than to hide their sexuality in fake marriages and such...that is a much sadder outcome for everybody involved..

At least it's now no longer acceptable to beat someone up just because they are different-as in they deserved it. Same with rape-very few would now accept that someone was asking for it just because of the way they were dressed or they shouldn't have been in a certain place.

How do they react to mixed race couples?

A marathon runner tried to date a hurdler once, but they weren't compatible at all. When they argued, which was often, the hurdler kept jumping to conclusions. Also, the runner was looking for a relationship - someone who could go the distance. They were doomed from the start. :(

With role models like Samantha Ronson to look up to, the next generation's in safe hands. Prejudice is an old people's game.
