Self proclamed physics, like John Edwards? Does he really have the power to contact people in the great beyond on the other side? It has been said that he has "private readings" for people charging them several "hundreds of dollars!
Is it just a money making gimmick for him?!

I dont know. Thats the honest answer.
I do believe our minds are enormous sources of energy and for now remain virtually untapped.
Our species is still in the process of evolution and I expect future generations will be able to expose some of the mysteries upon us now.
I will say I think its possible.
I cant discount something based on guesses or feelings.
Ill also say Id like it to be so.
If John Edwards is a phony hes very good at it, extremely convincing.

Yes, I do believe psychics exist, what I don't believe though is that they charge people to convey a message on to a loved one... who do they think they are.... bloody BT!

Tell me of just one incident where anyone other than the person receiving a message has been helped. What one single benefit to society or others has occurred. I have been to a number readings over the years and the format is always the same-----------Is there a Paul----maybe Saul---yes---There is someone calling out for Saul----she says her name is Betty, no Netty---do you know a Netty? Yes, well she says she is fine and for you not to worry. WHERE THE HELL DID YOU HIDE THE MONEY NETTY??? That's what we really want to know.

What about the instances when the police or even the FBI successfully use psychics to find people or re-create crime scenes ?
Can this be ignored ?

Ah, this is a bit different Nom. The psychics are not talking to anyone in the beyond but are intuitively aiding in the search attempt. To the best of my knowledge they do not have two way conversation with those beyond. And yes, I do believe that some people are endowed with a greater degree of intuitivness than most mortals.

Ive watched on TV John Edwards alot..........the man is amazing and he knows things that just is not possible for him to know........also......my Chris saw a very good well known one here.We first saw him when we went to see him in a place with many other people. He came to Chris and told him things that I didnt even know...Chris was stunned and booked up for a private reading as he had lost someone close a few months back. Not only did the person "come through" the code they had said they would always use if one of them died did also.Again Chris was confronted with facts that nobody else knew....I heard the tape after and even I was mentioned and different facts. We are talking here names....places.....schools....holidays....friends and even family members and again I say.... names.....so important in a reading.I have also in the past had many experiences .....many....and some may poo poo as they have every right to just as I have saying I know what I know and nothing will ever change my feelings or thoughts over this subject.

Ive just watched this tape and yes agree...........very clever BUT this gentleman is....he does so many different things that just blows my mind. One thing that always stands out in my mind is............he went to Walthamstow Dog Track....he spoke to some people who had lost and told them to make out the dog had won and take the ticket to the cashier and tell them they have come for their winnings........they were all obviously told they had lost.....Darren Brown took their tickets....told the cashier the same and got paid out on all tickets!!!!Is it mind control.....gawd only knows but the guy certainly has something thats for sure.

Absolutely I believe in psychics and mediums. They exist. About Edwards, I don't know. I've seen him in action and had my doubts because it was made for TV.
As for making money off it, sure why not. Why should they give their gift away for free?

Because the people seeking help from pychics are most likely vulnerable and grieving.... Both the spirits and the living come to these people to get a message across to their loved ones... If only those that can afford to have those messages put across can gain the help of a phychic then it's no longer a 'gift' is it... it's a profitable 'service'

I don't completely agree with that at all.
I see little of any difference between a person having a psychic "gift" making a living off their talent and a well trained carpenter making money off his. Of course people go to mediums and psychics when they're scared and vulnerable. And some will be had. That's the nature of believing what you cannot see. But I don't think it's wrong to charge for the service and it is a service. Not an arm and a leg mind you, but a reasonable fee.

Only that after paying a carpenter you usually have a nice book shelf or something, what do you get from a psychic other than another appointment to spend more money to hear more garbage.
However, I do not judge on where people find comfort, and if it helps get them through the day (without being hurt or ripped off), then to each there own.

A fascinating question. Will we, as a race, ever be able to answer this question?
I was raised by a mother who believed in the spiritual afterlife and a sceptical father. My family often conducted ouija sessions. This was never 'played'. Each session was set up seriously with prayers and so on. My Dad used to sit out because he didn't believe in it.
During one session, our questions had come to an end and we were looking at each other and thinking about ending the session. Then the glass began moving on its own. I should point out that we used a set of cards from a game pack called Can-U-Go. This is very similar to Scrabble but played with cards. We used a glass tumbler to rest our fingers on. During every session, the glass would frequently turn 360 degrees and no one had a firm grip on the glass because of this. We would struggle just to make contact with the glass.
So, the glass began moving on its own and the letters it touched were duly recorded. After the 'messages' had been read out, we looked at each other mystified by it all. Then my sceptical Dad piped up and declared that the messages were replies to his questions. Bear in mind that my Dad had not moved from his armchair let alone touch the glass. He believed from that day on. So did I until I came across the concept of visualisation.
Now, since boyhood, I have always been interested in how things work and the science of it. But, for years, I stopped wondering about spirits because there simply didn't seem to be anything concrete to work with. I just accepted it but stayed out of conversations on the subject. There is nothing more frustrating than a subject that can never be concluded so we can move on to the next step. Then I came across visualisation and found that it worked whether you believed in it or not. Naturally, my next thought was, "How"?
Ok. So how does visualisation work? Does anyone have any thoughts here? I have taken this to the quantum level. Now, I profess, I do not have a full grasp of this branch of physics yet (not psychics please) and I'm still learning in dribs and drabs. But what I do understand is that everything that exists in this universe has to exist at this level. Thus, for a spirit to exist, that spirit must consist of particles and energy (not just energy - one does not exist without the other). There are, of course, the other dimensions that we cannot perceive as such. So far, I have come across nothing that describes what these dimensions are, just that they exist. But visualisation puts an interesting angle on it all. Clearly, something radiates from the individual that influences events. The more focussed the individual, the stronger the radiation and the quicker the results. The more individuals with exactly the same visualisation, the more powerful the radiation. Traditional witchcraft would have used visualisation to perform their spells.
So, back to the point. Perhaps my Dad subconsciously felt left out of the family as he would be the only one who didn't participate. Perhaps he wanted to believe that it was true but needed a 'factual' basis upon which he could say that spirits do exist. For me, however, I realised that nothing had happened that could not have been brought about by visualisation.
Thus, I have ruled out spirits and an 'afterlife' as such. All of these things can be 'magically' conjured up by the sub-conscious mind. The sub-conscious is more powerful than anyone can truly appreciate. It can even project a scene as large as life that does not exist. Yet, I have a real problem with this. What happens to me when I die? Of course, if there is nothing, then I won't be in a position to worry about it after a die, let alone try anything else that spirits do. Possibly, it was this train of thought that led my Dad to want to believe that there was an afterlife. Perhaps he didn't want to believe that he would simply cease to be.
I confess that I have a problem with the idea that I simply cease to be. It almost makes a mockery of my existence. Yet, when I think about my awareness, all it seems to be is the sum of the five senses and the all-powerful brain. Those that undertake deep meditation don't seem to get any further than either a 'nothingness' or a 'brightness'. We cannot perceive anything more than the senses can perceive. The brain is limited by its ability to manipulate concepts and ideas. Instinct, or intuition, is just a connection made by the mind - no matter how incomprehensible the connection is made. Remember that the brain 'sees' a lot more than we are consciously aware of.
Yet, my awareness is very personal. Only I can look out of these eyes of mine - you cannot (ok, maybe you can if you replace your own with mine - but I think you know what I mean). Neither can I look through your eyes. Yet, the experience of being alive is so personal that it simply does not make sense that there is nothing more for me once I die. I have no conclusions as yet. Only more questions. Does my 'awareness experience' become transferred elsewhere? Do I relive my life? (Remember that as far as time is concerned, it is static and it is space that is constantly changing.) And so on.
Now, how about we consider the multi-dimensional aspect to all this? Anyone up for it?

^ Interesting post....
On the topic of visualisation, I've actually seen a spirit, no... not vodka!
A real one..... I wasn't aware of it at the time but... anyway here's what happened -
I was 14 years old, my granddad had been living with us due to him having stomach cancer, he was extremely ill and the closest I've ever been to anybody my whole life..... I loved him dearly....
One night I'd gone to bed as normal, I woke in the early hours to find my granddad sat on my bed stroking my hair, he'd often do that if I was upset or just wanted a chat so I wasn't at all surprised to see him, but I was a little angry because he'd woken me up LOL.....
Anyways.... he told me to be sure to tell my dad something in the morning "tell him yourself!" I said..... he said he'd prefer it if I just told him that everythings going to be OK... the job he'd applied for... he'd get it and we'd be fine. (dad had been out of work for years)... I was tired and agreed and went back off to sleep with my granddad still stroking my hair....
The next morning I came down to find my dad head in hands on the stairs.... he looked sad and I wanted to cheer him up so I passed on the message from granddad.... He just stood there staring at me.... mum shouted at me and told me not to be silly... I had no clue what they were on about....
They then sat me down and told me my granddad had taken seriously ill during the night, he passed away whilst being treated at the hospital at the exact time I claimed he came to me.....
whilst we were talking the phone rang.... My dad got the job......
I had no clue my granddad was taken to hospital that night...... I do know he was in my room though.....

Very very cool. I believe that.
It makes sense that your grandfather would come to you, a family member who he clearly loved. It is a great story and I know others who have similar experiences.
But in the case of Psychics, to think that he would go to a complete stranger, who would then charge you to get the message to me is a complete scam to rip people off.

It makes sense that your grandfather would come to you, a family member who he clearly loved. It is a great story and I know others who have similar experiences.
But in the case of Psychics, to think that he would go to a complete stranger, who would then charge you to get the message to me is a complete scam to rip people off.
A psychic is performing a service as much as a funeral parlour or a stand up comic. Why should a psychic not expect payment for said service.

By your comparisons, I would say it would be closer to a stand up comic...
However,
Listen as I posted earlier, I do not disagree with it if it makes people comfortable dealing with their loss, who am I to judge. I just think that there is a big market in this to rip off vulnerable people.

It's a strange ol' world.
Of course, you've got the perspective of the audience to consider. Whether you believe in the psychic or not, that audience member might believe wholeheartedly that spirits exist and speak through mediums, or not be sure and is looking for a sign.
But they're all intelligent enough to make up there own minds. Whether they make up their minds using logic, or emotion, or simple wishful thinking is up to them.
By attending a paid performance, the person is signalling a willingness to pay for the service whatever.

Hi Corolly
I was and have been referring to the original post of this John Edward charging hundreds.
I believe that amazing things happen, I have experienced them myself, there are people who are gifted and they are usually humble. I do not believe in Psychics in large commercial scales, no more than I would phone a 1-800 number to have my tarot cards read.

i didn't until after my mother passed. my daughter and i were having a very hard time getting along. the night before we had a huge fight that we did not speak over a year. my mother's candle that the priest had given us at her last rights. fell off the table and the candle and glass case broke into many pieces. everyone had gone to bed. we had no pets at the time. there was no way for the candle just to fall on it's own. but it did. waking everyone in the house. i did not think too much of at the time. but after the disturbance with my daughter. also a couple other things. I then began to believe my mother was trying to warn me. Or protect me.
