His parents owned a "schmata", a women's apron store, on Brighton Beach Avenue, parallel to the beach. It was called "Diamonds". The Tokens also went to my high school, again a few years before me. My friend's mother played Mah Jong with their mothers & kept us all up to date. Nearby, but not my high school, lived Carole King and her boyfriend, Gerry Goffin, I think they lived on Ocean Parkway which leads to Brighton Beach. Neil Sedaka was their friend.
Dion came from "da" Bronx, Belmont Avenue, the Italian section. I think Bobby Darin lived there too, not sure.
Good people! The only one I didn't like was Neil Diamond. I did like his original "Cherry Cherry" but then the re-make with all of that phoney "hua-hua!" turned me off. Everything he did after that had the same negative effect upon me.
Neil Diamond? Boo!
Neil Sedaka? Come-doody-doody-dum-dum!
I know that we're way off-topic but I don't care. This is too much fun! Besides, the OP is a good friend of mine.

Wrong, re: Sedaka. It is Down doobie do down down; cumma cumma down doobie do down down (Breaking up is Hard to Do)
Which do you like better, the original fast version, or the newer (say 1970's?) slower version? Now that's what I call an important question.
re: Off-topic---I do that so often as one thing reminds me of another, related thing (to me, anyway).
PS--Neil Diamond's parents were very nice.

I was a little tiny, eeney weeney girl in the '50's, but I had an older sister & my mother loved all popular music until the Beatles turned psychedelic. I heard this music all the time. My mother had her first inkling I was a lost cause when she said we were in the playground & I jumped off the monkey bars to dance to someone's portable radio playing "Rock Around the Clock", which in my mind at least I always think of as the first popular rock 'n' roll song.

I love the music and sometimes wish that I was a little older so that I could have enjoyed it while it was happening, instead of discovering it as an adult and searching for the old albums. I also have a fondness for DooWop.

Oh yes, the girl groups to be sure! Absolutely my favourites. But also the singles, particularly (Mmmmm!) Mary (Ooooooh!) Wells!
BTW. As a conglomerate stab from the past, I wonder if you remember this:

The Preps were always too all-American boy for me. I like the bad boys!
Ok "A little darlin', I was wrong, to try to love two (a well a well a well a well) my a dear-a La La La La, etc.
I loved Mary Wells, too. I saw those shows at the Fox in downtown Brooklyn. Although I was preteen, my ma & my friend's ma let us leave the house at 5AM to be front of the line & we were always the only 2 white girls to do that. I think I may still have some old programs from these shows.
