I'm always a glass half full guy. It was the Hitlerian remark I was wondering about. It's not something people normally toss out without some kind of explanation.

Hes a lunatic and aside from his little niche he has no influence whatsoever.
Hes simply not valid in American politics.
Because he is the only one I have really heard of thanks to the Bank of Scotland at one point getting involved US business interests-the TV station I think, the resulting outcry and protests forced them to re think getting involved with a homphobic right wing radical. Apart from that I was looking for sound bite comments to make a point and he seems to have plenty of attention judging from the number of web sites about him.
What you think of other countries is coloured by either going there and seeing for yourself or what you see in the media.
If I just judge the US from some of the reports in our media then it is full of gun toting christian fundamentalists that think they are on a god given mission to sort out the world in Christ's name and now have control of the president and set on starting armageddon. If I want to I can tune in to God television (there really is such a channel) and find sooner or later some preacher going on about how it is all foretold-the clash of civilisations of the thread title-such is their belief that given half a chance they would take action to make it all come true.
If the fundamentalists don't get you then some twit will get out his car and shoot you because you looked at him or her the wrong way or you bump in to somebody in a bar and what would be brief altercation is fatal because he has a gun and thinks you are going to attack him.
Of course I know that is unrealistic but if I want to believe that I can plenty to back up that opinion and no matter how much you want to say not all americans are gun toting lunatics you won't convince me if I want to believe otherwise. I just need to turn on the television and you have security guards in your schools o disarm the pupils-don't annoy the geeks as they can get hold of machine guns.
People are the same the world over and the world over there are those who will manipulate others for their own ends religon is a useful tool that can get good men carrying out the most appalling acts in the name of allah or JC or whoever.

They're not the same the world over. The Spanish Inquisition was - what? - before I started subscribing to my Weekly Reader. The world has changed since then. Spain has changed. The Catholic church has changed.
To equate Pat Robertson's verbal rants with homicide bombers is laughable.

You don't have to look very far back to find christians committing atrocities in the name of religon the the Balkans being just one obvious example, people lived in harmony until some decided that they should ethnically cleanse the area of those who were different and worshipped a different god-hang on though both christianity and islam are monotheistic religons so what is the basis for the dispute?
The rants of khomeni were just that until he got support and then political power and suddenly all those who supported him initlially faced the reality that his vision of Islam would brook no dissenters. Given half a chance do you really think a christian fundamentalist will leave those who disagree with them to lead their own lives? Do yoiu like being told that certain films can't be shown because of their content or do you prefer to make up your own mind, should brokeback mountain be banned on the say so of those who disapprove or do you prfer to make up your own mond and not go see it.
You have fundamentalists in the States trying to ban the teaching of the theory of evolution-they don't want discussion just for people to do what they are told and not argue with them.
The bible is not the unchanged word of god, you might agree or disagree but are there places where you would keep that opinion to yourself? ( that's a rhetorical question in case anyone is wondering)
Christians believe if you commit suicide you go straight to hell so you won't get suicide bombers-you do, I believe, get people blowing up abortion clinics and murdering doctors-an act of terrorism however you dress it up and whatever the motive.

There has been a clash of civilisations in the past on many occasions. In the west Liberal democracy won out over theocracy and monarchy which is why you have free speech in the United States as do we here.

I feel no different than a minuteman, I'm willing to protect and defend my constitutional right to my pursuit of happiness, and to protect my family. The perimeter of my defense is now mobile, instead of it being the borders and neighborhood of my home, it is now extended to include and envelop any action I see that would be construde as a terroristic act.
I don't know where you live but are you really so convinced that a terrorist is going to blow up a car in your neighbourhood? I lived in London during the heightof the IRA attacks, that was worrying but only if I was in the centre. Most of the time I knew the odds of being blown up were fairly remote, crossing the street was more dangerous.
The only way to stop terrorists is good intelligence. You don't see them coming, that car you just walked past could have a bomb in it so could that litter bin. Next time you are behind a petrol tanker just think what one of them going up will do to a town. I suppose what I am saying is there is no point worrying about it and living in fear, apart from anything else that's what the terrorists want you to do. They win when thy get you to change the way you live.

For the record, they are not trying to ban the study of evolution. Schools here seem to keep forgetting to drop that pesky word 'theory' into the curriculum. But that's another thread.
