I'll try to answer your question. The men I have known that are Gay, or homosexual if thats what ya'll prefer to refer to them as, had a difficult time fitting into a tight knit miitary group. My observation is they had a difficult time making a decision and sticking to it. They were often more concerned with how they were percieved by fellow soldiers rather than focused on getting the job done.
When I used the term unstable I meant that they pretty much were not capable of leadership decisions. I think its important to note here that these men earned their reputations long before I ever knew they were Gay.
I know very few gay women. I work with a few currently... they are the most flighty women I have ever met. Again I see the same characteristics, but with these particular women they constantly try to prove that their way of thinking is OK and right, it again preoccupies thier time, and in my opinion they spend too much time trying to prove they are normal.
I think we ought to start another thread on this if folks want to continue discussing this. We took this thread off its intended topic, way off.
My apologies to the OP.
Well, Far, I think that your perception of homosexuals is rather stilted. I have known several, both male and female that are strong, determined individuals perfectly capable of making decisions and that couldn't be less concerned about what people thought of them.
I think that it really wasn't that long ago that many people had the same concerns about having "blacks" in the military. And the issues that were brought up then were equally ridiculous. It seems as though that "social experiment" turned out just fine.
While I am very sure that my homophobic infantry husband would agree with you on all counts (boy do I love that man anyway!) but I am sure that someone in his unit is probably gay and pulling his weight just fine.

Men who want to 'serve to protect' their country, should be honored and respected for just that. Anyone who has an issue with what they do with their penis afterhours, has the real 'stability' problem. Because, bottom line, what the hell does that have to do with the price of tea in china?
I agree with that! Although it my own personal belief that because of the media Homosexuality has been shoved down our effin throats and it's really not as common as most are led to believe. I mean here's the real facts go check them out.
There are about 350 million people in the USA and only less than 10% are homosexual. And there are studies that say that out of that 10%, 3-4% aren't really gay they just choose that lifestyle versus a straight one. That leaves about 6% of people who are truly homosexual.
Simple math tells me that! There's only about 20 million homosexual's out of 350 million citizens. I think they should all have equal rights and they do. But as far as I'm concerned they are a very tiny portion of our total population and should not be placed up on this pedestal they have been recently.

[QUOTE=Far Rider]Practically, it has a lot to do with it.
Let me try to explain.
A typical day in the life of a soldier is boredom beyond recognition, to get through it ya gotta know your buddies, sometimes you end up knowing more about them that anyone else and they the same of you. I have spent years with the same group of guys. At times I knew when and how many times a day the passed gas, picked their nose, and thier a$$. I know what they ate, what they think about why their baby sister hates broccoli.... and I can list a whole lot here to make my point. Suffice it to say that you get to know your buddies intimatly and sometimes better than ANY one else.
To be out in the field, sharing all these things then suddenly find out youre buddy (who you have been best frinds with, taken showers next to, stood side by side while you both got a hernia check... etc....) tells you he likes to engage in homosexual activity...
It is betrayel in the highest. He let on he was one way and you find out he is another.

Why? If he isn't asking you to participate and wasn't engaging in homosexual activity with you, why is it so important to you?
My best friend in high school was gay. She spent many a night at my house and yes, we shared a bed but she was never, ever disrespectful of me or my feelings. She never made a pass at me or suggested anything inappropriate. I don't know, maybe it is because of her that I have to wonder why it is that anytime you say "gay" to a man they get all defensive and abusive.
And yes, it is a lot like the issue of blacks in the military was those many years ago. But if it makes you feel better to think that it isn't, that is fine with me.

You say you can usually tell if a person's gay. I, myself, would've NEVER guessed that Rock Hudson was gay! Nor would I have guessed that the father on the Brady Bunch was.
Also, just because a person is gay doesn't make them a pervert or sex-crazed! Doesn't mean they want to bed every person of that gender!
Fear fuels the fire. What is everyone afraid of?? Most (excluding some priests) are not rapists or molesters. They're human beings with a different lifestyle. I say people are afraid of difference.

I am quite sure that my soldier husband cried when his friend was killed by an IED last week. I know that he cried when he said goodbye to his family. It is nice to know that my man is human and capable of real, honest, human emotions. It certainly doesn't make him less of a man.
