AOL disconnection problems
AOL disconnection problems
I wonder if anybody here can help me. I'm with AOL, but lately I've been having endless problems with staying connected. Before I even connect I have a message telling me an error has been found in the system, and do I want to send it, which I have done a couple of times before. The real problem is after ten minutes or so, a message appears telling me a problem has occurred and the system is closing down within sixty seconds, which is as good as useless if you're trying to type out more than thirty-odd words. I ran the inbuilt computer check, but nothing untoward has come up. I don't want to throw good money after bad by paying £70.00 + to have some cowboy come along and tinker with my machine and then for it to start playing up again fifteen minutes after he leaves, WHICH ACTUALLY HAPPENED. Do other people have problems with AOL, or am I the unlucky one. You won't believe how p****d off I am about this. I don't want them to take the machine away, because I've got mountains of important and highly confidential info on the dard drive. Also, when I tried to send a Christmas story from my hard drive to the poetry section of ForumGarden, all I got was it set out as a fax, or did I want to set up a web site under that name. Yours, Fred.
In HIM I place my trust.

Why not go right to the source of the problem and call AOL. They should be able to resolve this difficulty for you.
AOL disconnection problems
First a couple of Questions:
Are you running Windows XP?
Do you have Service Pack two installed?
Could you also please post the error messages in full.
The second error message you are getting, I am guessing that it says along the lines of NT Authority System. Computer is shutting Down in xx seconds.
if this is the case, then it sounds as though you have the Sasser Virus (dont panic).
To fix this problem go to the following links.
Norton Sasser removal tool.
Microsoft Sasser Patch
Download the patch and the removal tool, this may take a couple of goes if the computer keeps restarting, (stick with it)
Click on start > control panel > performance and maintenance > system. then in the system properties window look for the SYSTEM RESTORE tab, in there turn off the system restore.
Go back to your downloaded patch and fix.
Install the microsoft patch first and then the removal tool. The latter is a lengthy process.
Once this is done, your second error should be solved and your computer will no longer shut down.
Post me more details of your first error message and we will take it from there.

AOL disconnection problems
I used to work for AOL the problem is AOL. Their software is like a virus. It is absolutely disgusting. I would recomend uninstalling AOL. ALL the way which means hacking into your registry. I can help you if you want. And getting a different ISP. AOL is the devil. It takes about two hours to completely uninstall it off of your computer. But you have to do that inorder to get any other ISP on there.
That windows is shutting down in X seconds is a worm. I forget what it is called i will look at it and see if i cant get the command string down so that we can stop it from shutting down. Its a fun one. Suprising that you got it. When it first came out AOL users were the only ones who didnt get it. These steps will stop the shutdown process
Disconnect the computer from the network/Internet connection. (Disconnect the cable if necessary.)
Restart the computer.
As soon as Windows opens and you see the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.
Type:
cmd
and press Enter.
Type:
shutdown -i
and press Enter.
In the Remote Shutdown Dialog that opens, do the following:
Click Add, type your computer name into the Add Computers dialog box, and then click OK.
In the "Display warning for" field, type 9999.
Type the following text in the Comment box:
Delay Lsass.exe shutdown.
Click OK.
Reconnect the network/Internet connection.
Connect to the Internet, and get the patch. Then continue with the steps described below.
When you have patched your computer and removed the threat, you can re-enable the 20 second default warning if you wish.
Also check your windows updates. Run a defrag. and that stuff. regular windows maintenence. run a virus scan and check for spyware. thats about all you can do if you dont want uninstall aol. Sorry....:-5 AOL SUCKS! big time!!!!! so do viruses! :-5

did you not know that AOL stands for always offline? Unless you've got a twelve month tie in, I'd format your machine and go with another ISP
