Report a potty mouth?

Yesterday afternoon, hubby and I went to a home improvement

type store. While there, I heard an employee in conversation

with another employee say "I told him to f'ing calm down".

I was walking past and it seemed very loud to me. I don't

know if it was in reference to a customer or not.

Well, I went and asked to see a manager and told him about

it. I had gotten the employee's name and just in case he

had borrowed someone else's "apron" I gave a physical

description.

My hubby didn't want some guy to "lose his job" and told

the manager that it didn't bother him at all. (I had told

the manager I didn't want the employee's "head on a

platter"). Is this a "guy kinda thing"? Am I being an

"old biddy"? If it happens in future, should I just

"fuhgeddaboutit"?

Manager was responsive and said he would talk to the guy

and tell him it was inappropriate.

If it had bothered me, I probably would have just told him myself that it wasn't appropriate language on the job.

Wouldn't want to talk to someone directly... avoid the possibility of anger

directed at me. And I don't think he got in much trouble beyond the manager

telling him it was inappropriate...

I just thought (and said as much to the manager) that with the potential for

kids hearing something like that or seniors, (granted they've heard it before!)

it just didn't seem like it showed respect.

i over-look those things because i am there to shop, not make trouble..i say leave it alone, no big deal, none of any ones business really... :wah: :wah:

I should be able to shop and not worry about my children having to hear that from an employee.

I think it does matter, you can get in to the habit of swearing every second word without realising it. It becomes verbal punctuation if you're not careful, especially in the warehouse. If you are dealing with the public it's common courtesy to watch your language bit possibly the guy wasn't aware of it or didn't realise you were nearby.

I used to be a retail manager and for some weeks after I started i thought effen was a make of fork lift until it dawned on me they also made pallets, lorries and a whole load of other things. It was such a part of the language it wasn't really swearing in an offensive sense. The female clerkess used to complain but none of the female shop floor staff ever noticed because the guts modified their language when women were present. yes it is kind of a guy thing.

On the other hand you did have to remind them to watch their language on the shop floor as while they would watch their language but occasionally forget.

I have a female friend who uses the "f" word constantly. When she comes to the club I work at, I have to remind her to watch her language because profanity is not allowed. She's a beautiful girl, fantastic person, but what a potty mouth! She even uses the "f" word in middle of words such as saying someone was "dysfu**ingfunctional".

Anyways, I, myself, would rather a person tell me if I offend them than go to my manager and have them do it.

I see someone reads Miss Manners! Frightfully, indeed!

I might say something directly to someone if that someone were female,

but I admittedly have a problem with anger from men. Not to say that I

would have gotten anger from this guy, he might have just come up with

"Gosh, I'm sorry" but it's very, very hard for me personally to face that kind

of thing on the off chance that I'll get yelled at. Years of a very abusive

relationship (NOT my husband!) have conditioned me to the max, I guess.

heh Bill I do know in Southern Calif if you say that to someone 9 out of 10 will start a verbal war which many times gets into a physical fight-Now they call it road rage even if you are not on the road. Some actually follow the people in their car and do the cut/off in traffic followed by the Finger Award! I am beginning to think half of the population needs to be put on Prozac!

it is a cheap trash shot when a female uses the F word. it has to be a young woman? mature women do not speak in a fashion to degrade themselves. to get annoyed and use the F word is the bottom of the barrel. in the bar situation, there is nothing to report, it already spilled out. :yh_pig

It's called "professionalism" and "courtesy" something many young people seem to have forgotten, or perhaps never been taught at all. And Loopie, I find your apathy distressing. He probably got in trouble, or at least spoken to, for something pretty small...

Pretty small? Business is conservative. If you owned the store and that cost you a customer, I'll bet you wouldn't take it so lightly.

If that person had done that in front of my wife, I would've made him apologize for insulting her honor...personally. And if that didn't work, I'd have a man-to-man discussion of manners and moral integrity with him...out back behind the store.

my Dad would have washed out my mouth with soap for the the things that i say on my job. i wasn't raised to use that kind of language. but in some circumstances you have to speak the vernacular since it's all they understand. ...in the store setting that is this topic, it was inappropriate but inadvertant, not directed at a customer. but as Jives says, a certain professionalism is required.

i just knew better my father was too big of a man to make mad! he wasn't the swearing type, so if we used inappropriate language we would be squeezed.....almost to death! :-6

It sounds to me like the guy was dealing with an irate customer but had perhaps embellished his response to his co-worker. Having worked in retail for years I doubt he said that to a customer and if he did - the customer should have reported it. As far as you overhearing the conversation - it is inappropriate language on the sales floor - period - and you were right to bring it to the manager's attention.
