Do You Recycle?

Post by cars »

Do you do your part to recycle your recyclable (is that a word) things to try to help save mother Earth? In some states I believe there is a fine if you are caught "not" recycling. Caught by who, is there such a thing as the "recycling police"? :-2

Recyclables, yes, that is a word. :)

It's taken very seriously here in Austria (I saw it was in Germany too), there are a million different kinds of bins for different things. And it's one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that recycling is one of the best, most responsible things you can do. I've noticed that most people are far more eager to talk about recycling than actually put any real effort into it, however. They even produced an amateur video here the school where they interviewed different people and filmed them sharing their feelings on the importance of recycling. But a quick look into the little corner where the bins are kept tells a slightly different story...

Couple of interesting posts on this subject from an earlier thread:

http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/showt ... ht=recycle

I was taught "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" and

I think that's a pretty good motto to live by.

My area makes most of it pretty easy for me, we have "single stream"

recycling and that is nice, to be able to put everything in one container.

I also go to our community's "Toxic Round-up" to get rid of things like

batteries and flourescent bulbs, so it doesn't go into the landfill!!

Many years ago (10?), I was watching a U.S. newsmagazine show (60 Minutes, or the equivalent) about curbside recycling in a large city. I think it was NYC, or it may have been a town in New Jersey.

There was a segment where a uniformed officer (not a cop, but an officer nonetheless) walked up and down the streets on garbage day, picking up bags and shaking them, listening for the clanking of glass bottles and jars. She had a big pad of tickets hanging on her belt, just in case she found an offender.

It's only now that they are starting to make an issue out of recyling here in Ireland. But some people don't want to have to even pay for their rubbish.

We have out bin outside because there is no where else to put in and I'm certainly not keeping it in the apartment and neighbours are always putting their rubbish in it even though we pay and they don't. It's makes me crazy :-5

I'd like to recycle, but they seem to have so many rules, it makes it too much work most of the time. Some of the recyling places have so many demands as to rinsing, cleaning and sorting that it is just simplier and faster to bag it and put it all out (all in one bag). I just can't allocate sufficient space inside to separate it all.

Right know what you mean, we have too many recycling rules also. We have to seperate glass bottles (Brown from clear) & from plastic goods/bottles, & from aluminum cans, & from "metal" steel cans, (all must be thoroughly rinsed out) paper goods seperated from cardboard, news papers seperated into their own piles, just so much extra work. Then the recycling collector actually looks at the stuff, & then sometimes picks out a certain item & just throws it on our lawn, as he won't take it away. (Annoying thing is that another time they take that same item & discard another, go figure!)

They just picked up our garbage a few minutes ago (Monday AM). Here in New Zealand we use a separate recycle bin and paper is separate in a bag.

Where I live in California, the recycling is done at the dumps. It varies in different parts of California.
