Paddy is early for the ferry, so he goes into a pub for a drink. Whilst in there, he gets chatting to the barman.

"Paddy, I'll tell you a riddle, but you've got to think carefully. Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father, is my father's son - who is it?" (It's yourself).

Paddy thinks hard. "My cousin, brother-in-law, uncle?" Etc. Every answer is wrong. Eventually he gives up.

"It's me." He then spends the next half-hour telling him to work out the riddle. Finally Paddy understands. He leaves, impressed.

The following evening, Paddy sees his mate in the pub.

"Mick, I'll tell you a really clever riddle, but you've really got to think. Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father is my father's sone. Who is it?"

Mick hasn't a clue, and gets all the answers wrong. In the end, he gives up.

"Alright, who is it?"

"Some bloke in a pub in Liverpool." Came the reply.

It is right - it's just a cackhanded 50's school riddle that was extended into an Irish joke. Let's break it down:

Brothers and sisters have I none - you haven't got any brothers or sisters - ok?

But that mans's father (your father) is my father's son (seeing as you haven't got any brothers or sisters, it brings it back you - yourself.)
