Gonna Try To Quit for The Third Time!

Post by observer1 »

I'm gonna try for the third time to quit. I did fine the first 2 times. I had quit for 7 months the first time, even gained 30 lbs, but was determined not to let weight-gain start me back up. Then I got robbed at gunpoint & started back up that night. The next time, I had quit for about 6 months, then went to Jamboree In The Hills & just got stupid. Everyone was drinking & smoking & I craved one. Thought I could control it. HAHAHA!! Not so. I just read the CDC's website & they said to set a quit date. I choose May 31st, cuz that's National No Smoke Day. It's also my payday & I'm gonna go get the patches. I think I'll need them, at least at the beginning.

I have to do this! And I'll need support. My mom just passed away in December from Emphysema. I don't want my daughter or grandchildren seeing me like that. And I'm tired of being breathless & not being able to sing anymore, cuz I can't hold a note, or even reach it!

I'm counting on your help! Remember... May 31st! Anybody want to join me??

Good luck Ob1, I am trying to stop also but instead of picking a date I just made a snap decision three days ago its hard but up till now I havn't given in. I think we could both do with a lot of support, I have a packet sitting on my desk and everytime I look, there in big black letters I have wrote the word NO to remind me I have stopped other wise I might just forget and light one. :)

I have a box of patches that I will be using at some point today. Only one patch at a time, of course! I refuse to use the patch until I finish this pack of cigarettes though. (AT $5.00 a pack, do you really blame me?)

I also started some new anti-depressants this morning. The next few days ought to be very interesting.

Good luck LD!! We can do this! Of course, I haven't started yet. But I will! I just can't afford to get a box of patches yet. I only pay $3 a pack for cigarettes. I know, that's expensive too. But I want to be mentally prepared, as well. DETERMINED, ya know?

I never have smoked, but do wish you luck. When my niece was quitting, she carried a small container of cinnamon and mint flavored toothpicks...grabbed one of them when she felt the urge. Her only issue was she got addicted to THEM:wah:

I'd much rather be addicted to TOOTHPICKS!! No cancer, emphysema, coughing, etc from those. :p

Today's day one for me, so far so good, except for the couple of times I've had to go to the bathroom and scream in a towel. Should of known the day I decide to quit, Ayden has to be the most stubborn. :(

Well last night I totaled up how much I spent a month on cigarettes. I spend $224 bucks, that's half a car payment, 2/3's of a house payment and that's 3 or 4 pairs of shoes depending where I shop. :D

Check at Wal-Mart for patches. I got the store brand of patches for $10 less then the name brand. And in all honesty, my mom bought them for me - she has been on me for years to quit! She also got me a couple of bags of wintergreen lifesavers and I have a huge bag of starlight mints. Also, carrots and ranch dressing. I may have to stop and get some croutons too. The more munchies the better is my motto!

I came across this website when looking for information on quitting. It had several helpful tips. So I just wanted to share it.

These patches better work - they have exactly the same stuff in them!!

Thanks for the link, Sheryl!

My mom's friend said that she had to change a whole lot of stuff when she quit. Different radio station, different route to work, different t.v. shows....etc.

I like my radio station and my t.v. shows! And I certainly don't want to stop drinking coffee!!

I found out at my smoking cessation class (from when I stopped before) that drinking anything w/caffeine in it isn't good during this time.

Was thinking about doing it tonight, but when I drink, I like to smoke. However, I don't have an urge (or not near as strong of one) with these patches. My other problem is that I just had kidney stones. Went to the hospital in an ambulance this past Tuesday. I guess if it has cranberry juice, it should be alright, right?? :D

Makes sense: it's kinda like combining medication and behavior therapy. When the two are used in conjunction, the chance of success is much higher:)

You mean smokes?? Yep. I do better when I still have some. Feel more of an urge, when I don't, for some odd reason.

If you're talking about something else... I'll never tell! ;)

My sister told me, yesterday, that I should start again, because my temper's pretty durned short. I'm not sure if I'm just starting to state the truth & they don't like it (I always held back before), or if I'm indeed short-tempered. Plus it IS full moon!! But I'm NOT starting again!!! My brother-in-law's in the hospital from a major heart attack & was told he HAS TO quit... but I know he won't. He's MY age!!

STOP SMOKING :lips:

11 years ago, whilst in my late 40s, I stopped being a 40-a-day smoker

when I developed Asthma.. When the doc handed me the inhalers, I knew

instinctively that I never wanted to smoke again. It was HARD for nearly 2 yrs but

then the asthma vanished and suddenly I felt it had all been WORTHWHILE.

CALL YOURSELF A NON-SMOKER FROM DAY ONE.

You CAN do it !! :driving:
