Generally, I think respect is fading as we become less formal - more relaxed with each other.
My younger coworkers laugh at me when I call them sir. They think it's silly, so they've made up a name for me I won't repeat. I don't respond at all to their new name, not even when one of them was struggling with a heavy cabinet trying to keep from dropping it on the floor (I was stunned he called me a derogatory name and actually expected me to help him). He got the message that I respond quickly to respect, and not at all to abuse.
I am impressed to no end when I see young parents demand their children show respect to adults. Sir/ma'am, please/thank you. I want to hug the parents, but there's a chance they'd get the wrong idea.
