A friend who may wish to remain anonymous (:wah: ) introduced me to this board sometime ago and I've been lurking awhile. I work at a large zoo and am interested in just about anything related to animals and travel and humor. I love to cook and read and enjoy classical music.

It's been a long time since I introduced myself to a message board...it feels odd! Is this enough?

Goodness! You folks are all online at once! Thanks for the welcomes. We'll see if my friend wants to 'fess up. (There's a clue there, if you know Southern accents.) Does he get extra points for a referral? Free dishes or something?

Bez said "Tell us all about the Zoo....I've never met anyone who works in a zoo."

I'm not sure what you'd like to know. Some days it's the most rewarding, humorous, satisfying, deeply enjoyable thing on earth. Other days (when animals die, for example) will break your heart.

Zoos have always been places for families to go and spend time together, marveling at the great diversity of life. Increasingly, though, zoos realize their roles are expanding.

In these days of horrendous climactic changes and human overpopulation, zoos are without a doubt, ARKS. Without captive and in-field breeding programs, we will lose all great apes in the wild within 20 years! Hundreds of species disappear every year! So--besides recreation, conservation is a huge part of what we do.

In addition to those, education is critical....we have hundreds of thousands of school children visit every year (free, I might add,) hoping to capture their interest and their hearts, so they'll grow up to feel the passion for animal life that we all share.

And finally, behavioral research is an increasing part of what goes on in zoos. By studying animals in the zoo, we can learn how their behaviors have contributed to "who" and "what" they are. (We could never have increased the population of California Condors, for example, without researchers learning how they breed/choose a mate/lay eggs, etc.)

Now--I've just given you the "zoo talk," and if you're still awake, I'll say that, in addition to all the above....it's fun to watch the monkeys and hold the snakes and play with the bugs!

Thanks, everyone.

I'm an educator and volunteer keeper. I spent 9 years preparing food for various monkeys--I'm a mother, so I know how to chop fruit and veggies! :wah: I've been pinched and peed on more times than I'll ever remember and one of my all-time favorite monkeys used to grab me by the nose and pull my face up to hers so she could "groom me." (Bianca was a black howler, if you know those.)

It's very satisfying to give adult tours to colleges and special interest groups...my favorites to do are of the primates. We do a really well-received one on Valentine's Day called "WOO AT THE ZOO." It's for adults only and it's great fun to do because we can discuss all the FUN stuff!

People ask what my favorite animal is and I usually say it's the one I'm looking at when you asked. There aren't any I don't like.

Ah, Nomad....your reputation has preceeded you. ("There are lots of nice and interesting people.

;) I promise not to hold it against you.

I was born a poor black child, in outer Mongolia. Life was hard, as we followed the yaks, lugging the yurts. It pains me to speak of it. Perhaps some day, sitting at the campfire, drinking raki?

First grade? What was that? The steppes were our class rooms as we herded the yaks into the high mountains and watched the yakettes born in early spring. (That's a Mongolian technical term, by the way.) Grandma taught us to make yak-butter tea, which was our drink of choice. (Later on, we learned how to make Mongolian fire-water, but that's another tale.) We played polo on foot, with sheep heads as targets and could race for hours, barefoot, dodging ca-ca as we went.

As do I. We used to frolic with them as we crossed the land bridge into what was later called Southern California, land of fruits and nuts.

OK, I know I am tired, but when I first read this line,I did not read the word AND, therefore thought LULU was saying she enjoyed watching the monkeys hold the snakes and play with the bugs. I then thought it would be neat to watch the monkeys do that too!! :wah:

Lulu, you're a master networker!

The last time a group of friends all dropped in at once it was hardly what I'd call a positive experience, though I met a couple of really good friends because of it.

But this time is definitely different. You & your friends bring fresh breezes and sunshine ... and Rain! :D ... to our beautiful garden. I'm glad to meet you.
