My sons syrian hamster hates the heat!!

Post by woppy71 »

Ok, now I thought that Syrian hamsters came from Syria and in Syria it is very hot. So how come my son's hamster seems to be spread eagled in his wheel cooling down? Weird.:-2

That pretty much sums up where he is now, I think the temp is a little on the high side though.

Same thing with Trixie, my chinchilla. But in her case, she is from the Andes, where it is cold. Her fur is very thick and dense. We have to keep the room cool in the summer.

Originally that's where they come from... but probably not your hamster

or his direct ancestors... they now are more aclimated to "typical"

heat of your area... plus, I would venture to guess that Syria heat is

MUCH drier than what you guys are going through now.

Put a couple ice cubes in his water source!!

There are various "cool beds" you can get... but in a pinch, a well

sealed Ziploc filled with ice water might do the trick. Place it where

he can get close (it IS a he hamster?) but not where he would have

to lay against it.

You know, I'd never thought about the fact that he is probably generations away from a true syrian hamster. D'oh!

The idea of a cool ziplock sounds good, I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the ideas:)
