One thing I like about this little part of the internet is the diversity of it's people. I figure there have to be alot of people, who have been to a lot of places I have never been.

When I retire, I plan on traveling!! I have about 22 years before I retire.. so it would be interesting to find out what others think the best places to visit.. and why.

I was fortunate enough as a lad, to travel to many countries.. of all the countries I ever visited.. I would have to say Scotland was the best! It's beautiful!! I spent about a week in Hollyloch, and another week or so in Edinburgh and Leith. Scotland, to me.. was so much like Oregon.. the trees, the weather, the people...... the only thing about Scotland that I found difficult is understanding what the Scots were saying!! They speak a kind of English that is hard to understand unless you are drunk.. after a few pints, they make perfect sense though!!(Which is one more reason I like Scotland!!)

So... I am interested.. What is your favorite vacation destination? I am biased.. I like places that feel like home.. Scotland felt like home to me..

I would have to say Switzerland. This is a beautiful country.I spent six weeks there back in 89. If you like beautiful scenery this is the place for you.

Germany is a good country to go and visit, beautiful scenary, good food (very good beer!!) and friendly people (not including the first half of the last century;)).

I spent eight happy years living there, and I wouldn't rule out living there again.

As I have never traveled outside of North America (have been to both Canada and Mexico), I would have to choose Canada as a place I would like to spend an extended visit.

If I were to choose a place I have never visited, I may want to choose England or Australia

Captain, I'm going to treat that as a serious question.

Rule number 1: When you set out to travel, you need to decide what your personal limits are, as to encounters with the world.

For example, some people have been horrified to learn I spent weeks in Bangladesh, Nepal and India. ("How do you stand seeing all that poverty?") Some people can't and shouldn't see life in these areas...don't go there if you aren't willing to look PAST the poverty and see what else you'll find. (A "former" friend who was on that trip took dozens of photos of filthy pit toilets and beggars....that's "all" she saw.)

You need to know your dietary limits and your enviornmental comfort limits. Don't travel to Borneo if you don't enjoy sweating or you can't bear being eaten by leeches and mosquitos! Don't go to Patagonia if you can't walk long distances or be comfortable in spartan lodging. Don't go to Nepal if you're uncomfortable with dirt or people wanting to sell you things. Don't go anywhere if you're uncomfortable with people speaking foreign languages and not understanding your guidebook phrases.

There are "travelers" and there are "tourists." Both are perfectly acceptable and many destinations await all of them. Before you leave, be certain you know which category is yours. Start small. Begin conservatively. Learn your limits.

Rule number 2: If you travel with anyone else (and you should, for many reasons) be sure they're acquainted with rule number 1! There is nothing worse than being absolutely enchanted with someplace and being in the company of someone else who is miserable because they can't get "a good American meal," for example.

Travel is the most wonderful gift life has brought me! I've seen things and met people who have changed my view of the world forever! One of the things I admire least about my fellow Americans is the reluctance many have to get outside our borders and learn what the world is REALLY about!

I'm excited for you!

It was a serious question Lulu.. well.. meant to entertain anyway.. but It's a subject that I find interesting, and entertaining.

Where is Patagonia anyway? As soon as I am done posting.. I am going to have to look that one up.. It seems like I've heard of it... now you have me wondering.

I've been to Great Britain.. Portsmouth and Plymouth. Two different sides of the isle.. and two different cultures entirely! I did enjoy England.. The food was outstanding!! Believe it or not.. my favorite food while I was in England was not the exotic foods offered in the nicest restaurants.. it was found on street corners sold by independent vendors.. fish and chips.. MAN!! Thats some good eats right there!!

I've been to Germany.. Kiel.. now that place was FUN!! The thing that stands out in my mind was the veal.. Germany knows how to cook baby cow!! The apple schnapps and beer were good to! While I was there, the had this festival called "Kielor Woken" (I am sure I misspelled that.) It's a festival they have every year.. and I mean to tell you it is a BLAST!!

I have never been to Switzerland.. I would like to. If I ever make it to Switzerland I would like to open up a bank account there.. not because I have a lot of money.. it would just be cool to say that I have a "Swiss bank account!"

I have been to Denmark though. I was dropped off in Aalborg on the fourth of July!! Did you know they celebrate American Independence day in Denmark?! Big beautiful blonde's.. I don't remember eating anything while I was there.. I am sure I did.. but mostly I remember the big beautiful blonde's!! Of all the countries I have ever been too.. I think Denmark definitely hosts the most beautiful women.. (If you like big beautiful blonde's that is...)

Now Australia.. I haven't been there. I have a few INTERNET friends that will let me crash on their couch should I ever visit.. and I would love to go there.. I don't know if my liver is ready though.. If I ever get to Australia, I think I would like to see the desert... and the coast... I think if I ever get to visit that continent, I would like to stay away from the big cities.. and I am not going to eat Vegemite!! *YUCK* I'm not sure If I would eat Kangaroo either.. Marsupials are not generally something I think of as food.

Really? People eat "possum, you know! :)

Patagonia is a region shared by Chile and Argentina. It's the old TIERRA DEL FUEGO (the Indians there learned to coat their fishing canoes with tar so they could have fires to keep them warm as they fished.)

It's a rugged area and probably enjoyed best by "travelers," rather than "tourists."

Cruises and train tours (great fun, both of them) are more what I mean by "tourism."

I will.. if I die before I am able to re-visit Scotland, I will have died unfulfilled.. I do love Scotland.

South America is another place I have never been.. Which explains why I was confused about Patagonia.. I would like very much to go to Chile, and Argentina.. although right now is probably not the best time.. lot's of unrest in those countries at the moment..

I want to travel.. but I would also like to live long enough to come back home..
