Every Now Then...there's good news!

First, let me say this is NOT an appeal for money! I wanted to share some good news about an effort some friends have made for the "very much at risk" Island fox.

Island foxes (like Darwin's finches) have evolved on several islands off the California coast. During the years that DDT was an approved pesticide, the native Bald Eagle population of the islands was decimated and Golden Eagles moved in.

Bald Eagles don't eat the little foxes....but Golden Eagles DO! Due to predation by the birds and some other pressures due to introduced species and human pollution, it appeared the little foxes were doomed.

BUT...a group of friends got together and began a program to work with the Federal Government to try to save the fox. Those crafty Golden Eagles were NOT interested in relocating and it took MUCH effort to get them off the islands and return the Bald Eagles! Large groups of feral pigs threaten the habitats and they're being relocated, too.

It's interesting to look through the "what we've learned" section....one Bald Eagle left the islands and flew east...all the way to Montana!

Our zoo has a breeding program for them....they are INCREDIBLY cute!

They're darling! I didn't even know they existed. This is such a great thing! The little foxes are so cute and those people are good for wanting to save them. Thank you for this info! I learned something new.
