"in a broadcast on all Thai television channels the leadership of the armed forces said it had taken control of Bangkok, suspended the constitution and parliament, declared nationwide martial law and ordered all troops to return to their bases" sounds like it worked, then. The old PM is insisting it didn't but then, he would say that, wouldn't he.

They keep couping every few years. Sometimes the entire cabinet is expeditiously and permanently dismissed, other times it's less gory.

Why oh why can't societies closer to home sort out their political problems so effectively?

It's amazing how many ex-politicians won't travel to or through Europe these days, since that sod Pinochet was mortified at Bow Street magistrates' court. Power to the people!

I think it's more that too many countries allow immunity from prosecution to their ex-politicians, regardless of the subsequent evidence that gets unearthed. Presidential pardons, all sorts of mechanisms. The default ought to be thorough investigation in a neutral court for everyone with a shady past.

LOL! You should see the corrupt diplomats and what they get away with in the states because of 'diplomatic immunity'! It sickens me! Thats why the UN is such a burden! Maybe we should move it to France!

I'm sure it would only delight both the French and the UN both. And me.

Anyone who's been in Thailand will feel sorry for the gentle, friendly Thai people. I wish them well....
