The Shadow of the Wind...Zafon / Pullman's Dark Materials??

I've started this book and am really enjoying it however my BF has finished this book and said that it kinda trails off in the same way as Pullman's 'dark materials'

I spent HOURS on Pullman's dark materials, and pure stubborness made me finish it - I found the end of the third book tiresome and was livid when I got to the end of it and found there was nothing but 'pish' in the final chapters!

Has anyone else read either of these?
