Computer Time v TV Time

When I sit among my colleagues every once in awhile for lunch, all they talk about is the latest TV shows or movies. I don’t really watch TV at all, I find the quality of shows to be pretty boring. I do go see one or two movies a year, something that might peak my interest. I prefer reading or computer time, it seems much more interactive then watching TV.

What are your views of this? Do the majority of you watch TV also? How can you spend much time watching TV and being on the computer also?

I like to watch TV shows that make me laugh but when I do, I have less time for here. I like to do both.

Dr. Who I understand, I watched that show in the 70s-I am not into watching the news one yet. But I find I am totally bored after sitting in a chair in front of a TV for 15 minutes or more, it is rare for me to watch even an old movie.

Why do people always talk about these subjects, and very little about anything else-like politics, local news, etc? I only go to lunch once a week with them, I make myself go. I don't really want to, but I realize I lack normal adult conversation at home, so I think it is good for me. It is a very nice group of teachers this year, I like them alot. But they go home and watch TV all night. It sounds so boring.

That is exactly how I feel! I would rather be here, saying hi to everyone, then in front of the TV. It makes me feel better to know I am not alone in thinking this way.

I enjoy watching movies at home. I make it into an event, get the lighting right, home theatre experience and all that. I dont watch too many shows though, just a few. Im stuck on Discovery, National Geographic, PBS, History, A & E etc. I do try to catch The Office, pretty funny.

I guess you could get sort of addicted to certain programs...I know whenever we're in Ireland the world stops for most of the women once the soaps are on....

If I talk about what I like to do, which is writing articles, poetry, yadda yadda, it sounds very conceited to them. They don't care about such things, even the history teachers don't keep up in their subject areas. So I have stopped mentioning those things.

Half of them are married, I know when my husband was well that TV was off half the time, there were better things to do.

I watch T.V. on Sundays...

any time else I don't watch T.V. at all..

I've been on the computer for about the last month as I have to stay at home waiting to hear about a call to start work. When they do call I may have to go in within an hour so I can't be gone. But when I do start work again eventually, I will be mostly working, and when I'm not I'm going to be going to the gym and relaxing in the hot tub.

I will have to carry a pager as I will always be on call.

I have a small handfull of shows I enjoy watching every week. Usually the ones that are a bit mentally challenging, like the CSI shows, or courtroom shows.

I prefer to watch movies usually. More often than not I sit watching with part of my brain, and use the rest to read or be on the computer. Usually I prefer to have the TV as background.

I used to watch alot more. But I then went through a time when I was mainly working evenings, and weekends and got away from watching alot. Just never got back into it.

When I am home alone for a day off, when Rick is at work, I often will not even turn on the TV till later in the day when the news comes on.

I never used to watch TV much, but since I've been on my own and have got a new 'surround sound' system, I have watched The History Channel and some historical 'docu-dramas'. I have also been watching Jane Eyre on a sunday evening.

I watched a docu-drama about Mrs Beeton the famous Household Management book writer of the 1800s. She died at 28 of a STD which she caught from her husband...I'm sure there is info on the net about her...her story is nothing like you would imagine.

I like 'strictly come dancing' but Soaps bore me to death. I prefer 'talk radio' really.

On the occasions I do watch T.V., I only watch the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the National Geographic, and I always watch the NFL and college football(Am).

That sounds like my house, KSnyder. Even my husband flips between those stations the most, with the weekend being devoted to football games. And he has a hard time concentrating for long on anything!

I don't do t.v. that much, with the exception of E.R. and Big Brother when it's on. Other than that, it's generally off, unless my son's watching it.

After almost 20 years of marriage to a TVaholic.... I prefer computer time, or reading time over TV. I can't get to enthused about much on TV beyond cooking shows with Jr Minks. I find a lot of TV insulting to my intelligence... mind you some of the web sites I have seen ahahaha oh never mind.

The wife and I like King of Queens. She gets a tad annoyed when I run downstaris to reset the auto surfs. Some actually let me exchange auto for manuel.

Most of the new shows are lame. I find myself watching older shows when I do watch TV.

I'll watch SCI FI when Kristi lets me. Erik our son really likes the King of Queens music.

They're the best even if they do repeat things over and over again.

I think your brother would be happy with whatever you give him, but if he is specifically intrigued by the world, the Eco system, and various types of cultures, as well as likes to read(obviously) I say go for it. He'll love it.

I was watching the National Geographic a little while back, and they had the episode of where the Reticulated Python had been incorporated in the Everglades by that of owners whom released them in the wild after failing to take legitimate care of them, had eaten a 13ft. alligator and had ultimately split open near the head.

I myself believe that upon the python eating the alligator was then attacked by another alligator. I think this all happened in and around the time in which the people in the helicopter had noticed it floating in the swamp, which then spooked the alligator trying to consume it, and it then swam off. I could be wrong.

It was an episode that has been aired a few times, but I still watch it, because there is never anything else on.

If you think the quality of mainstream television is boring, try Sky television - that's even worse. I pay £25.00p.m. for watching the same c**p over and over again. What's on Sky 1 one week is on Sky Movies the next. All they do is just swap the channels round, and half of them are repeats anyway. It's a sad fact that the only thing worth watching nowadays is Sky news, watching people getting blown up. Far, far more interesting is philosophising about religion and current affairs, so long as it doesn't end up as a slanging match.

I have gotten rid of our TVs. We refuse to pay the license fee. Besides, most of it is just regurgitated rubbish. The internet is our library, news source, entertainment source, etc, etc. Any TV that I wish to watch can be downloaded in a matter of minutes, as a torrent. So for our household I am afraid that the TV has been relegated to the dustbin. And long may it reside there. In the UK, the BBC seem to think that everyone watches the TV. They impose a license system that in effect says, "if you do not have a license then you are breaking the law, because we do not believe that you do not actually watch the TV." They have powers to come to your home and expect to be allowed in to check that you do not actually own a TV set. So far they have not been allowed to set a foot inside my door. But it seems that the point in law that says, "Innocent untill proven guilty," has gone out of the window, where they are concerned. They operate on the maxim that you are guilty untill you prove your innocent...

so even if my tv is not plugged in and is not connected to the ariel wire i'm still liable to this very unfair tv tax

If you have any means of receiving a TV signal on UHF or Satellite or Cable then you're open to prosecution if you don't buy one. I'm waiting expectantly for the first demand from them, because there's no TV here and I want to play with their enforcers.

even if you just own a TV and its not plugged in you have to have a license that is just not fair that cant be right i live with suzy but i do have a flat with a TV in it but its not plugged in

so i get letters from the license people i have just binned them

so does it mean 100% for sure that if the TV is there unplugged i need a licence just for owning it

I have to have some kind of background noise, so I always have the TV or talk radio going, even when I'm online and not paying attention. Silence bothers me for some reason.

Actually, the crime is "having an apparatus capable of receiving TV. There is no crime if you can prove that,

a) Your TV is de-tuned, ie cannot get a picture on any of the channels.

b) Is not connected to the aerial.

If you only want to use it for playing with your console games etc, or watching DVDs then they cannot touch you, however. The onus is on you to prove the use of your TV set.

If you have a TV tuner card in your PC, but you only use it for the video input, maybe, editing home video etc. Providing it is not connected to an aerial etc, then you should get away with it.
