Really??
I think that foreigners know better Italy than we italians.
I've visited Torino, Florence, Roma, Siena, Napoli, just to mention few, but - it is so shameful, I know - never visited Venezia and Sicily...
We always try to plan a trip there, but there is always something which stops us... I'll be able, one day or another ...:driving:

oh, about lakes: they are simply wonderful.
Better in spring or summertime
All lakes are beautiful, but I like so much the little Lago d'Orta. It has a small island in the middle, you can reach it by boat only and there are no cars on it.

Looks like that's going to be my next holiday! When is the best time of year to visit? (I don't want to go anywhere in tourist season)

Of course, springtime and summertime are the best: but the sweetness of autumn and the white landscapes in wintertime are "unmatchable" (is that right?)

I've only visited Italy briefly whilst on a Med. cruise. But it is so beautiful, we went to Pisa and the drive through the countryside was lovely. Pisa itself is pretty. We also spent a day at Civitaveccia (is that right?) which, although it's used as a base for cruise ships to send passengers to Rome, is a nice town in itself, we didn't go to Rome because it was a long day and too hot for our daughter to be stuck in a coach for hours!!
I hope that one day we'll be able to go back - but having seen the evidence we won't be driving!!

If you do choose to ignore some of the most controversial and forward thinking artists of their times - Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci (Palazzo Veccio) then what is left........ let me tell you!
Errrm, a few hundred years of incredibly interesting politics and religious control? If you consider what the 'artsy stuff' had to get through to survive (particularly in renaissance Florence) it's pretty amazing.
You have the whole 'Savonarola' thing - which is an extreme clash of politics and religon, and fascinating.
For the conspiracy theorists amongst you - just take a look at the Medici family and some of their connections (from Nostradamus to George Bush) You only have to wander around some of the big cities with your eyes open and you can spot the signs!
Now - if these aren't reasons enough to go to Italy, then you really are best off staying at home!

Just two words to top off.
I believe that – even forgetting the most gorgeous towns, not only in Italy, but all over the world –
every Country has its own beauty, even if there are no monuments, museums, and so on¦
(all these things are the Country added value, beyond the natural value)
There are so many beautiful villages, towns, not known by mass tourists, which keep intact their old charm, enchanting landscapes, small eating houses, unchanged in years, and other hidden treasures.. all “stuff that really worth visiting..

Imagine the scene - 20 bikes, 25 bikers touring Europe during a long and *very* hot summer stop for the night in a village outside of Turin.
After pitching camp and performing our ablutions (lovely campsite with very good showers) we headed on into the village - very quiet!
Spotting some local lads we asked after the nightlife (beer, women, that kind of thing) and struck gold. Out to the main road, turn right, three kilometers to the crossroads, turn left, one kilometer, big building on your right is the biggest nightclub around - loadsa girls.
Off we roared, keen as mustard. Directions were superb and we swept into the car park en-mass. Posh place too - attendants to park the bike up for us, attendants to take our helmets and jackets to the cloakroom, fancy decorations on the walls. Never seen anything like it.
We walked into the main hall and stopped dead!
You have never seen anything like it. Loadsa women sure - all kissing each other. Loadsa men doing the same with gay abandon. Some of the costumes you had to see to believe! To say our collective gobs were smacked would be an understatement.
Worse was to follow! The cloakrooms would not give us our kit back, the parking attendands had misteriously disappeared and our bikes were nowhere to be found!
All in all a shocking experience for a callow youth - we reached Monacco the next day and I didn't see Italy again for 30 years.
Such is life

No, I do not agree at all.

Such experiences disappoint me very much, both if it happens in Italy and abroad - because it may happens everywere.
I understand very well your mood but, really, these are the kind of things that I the most displease.
My daughter had her rucksack and all documents stolen when she was in Austria, my boss had his portable phone stolen when in Hong Kong and also his credit card had been cloned..
I would like to know - if you remember - where were you when it happened
and if you made a charge.

How sad you had such an unpleasant experience Bryn. I hope your visit to Italy thirty years later was happier. Maybe you can write about that in here too.
Is the weather starting to get cooler in your area now, Accadue? I was speaking to my daughter in London this evening and she says it's now quite cold in the morning. Do you have daylight saving time changes in Italy? Here, our clocks go forward an hour this coming weekend - we'll be in summer time. In England they go back an hour.
I just finished carving a Halloween pumpkin. It's not the best one I've ever done, but it's not the worst either. Grin. Do you celebrate Halloween in any form in Italy?

Hi Cher. Yep, I think we need to bring a bottle of champers in here. Accadue is probably feeling bad.. grin... it's not nice when people's only mention of your country is unpleasant stuff. Accadue is of course a lady of considerable style and grace, and it's wonderful to have her here. Hang on and I'll get us some good champers.

No charges - it was just some kids having a laugh at our expence. The idiots at the nightclub did not help but we lost nothing but our dignity
Looking back at it we saw the humour but we were not best pleaed at the time.
I cannot remember exactly which village but it was just south of Turin.

Dear AussiPam, dear Cher,
of course it is not a pleasure hearing such news but, anyway, I like it or I don't like it, there things which happen even if we do not agree.
A bad experience is always presents in our mind.
In Italy we says: once you have been burned with hot water, you will be afraid even with cold water.
No problem: I am serene, but only really deep sorry when I hear those news.
ciao a tutti

As you say, these things happen - not something to dwell on or worry about.
