Political Ads in Sanctuaries

With a stained-glass window behind him, candidate Harold Ford Jr. strolls through the Memphis church where he was baptized to tell voters this is the place where he learned right from wrong.

Using a church sanctuary as the backdrop in his newest campaign commercial, the Democrat running for the U.S. Senate has picked an unusual setting. One expert on religion and politics said it was the first political ad he'd heard of actually filmed inside a sanctuary.

Gesturing to the pews behind him, Ford in the ad says, "Here, I learned the difference between right and wrong. And now, Mr. Corker's doing wrong. First, spending millions telling untruths about his Republican opponents, both good men, and now me." He goes on to tell viewers about his record on national security.

"I love it," Maury Davis, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Madison, said of Ford's use of a church as a backdrop. "I like that he brought church back into the political arena."

Ouch! What a dilemma for the "seperation of church and staters" that might have otherwise supported Ford, Jr. What to do! What to do! Do they vote for Corker or sit this one out. I mean, this Ford guy is dangerous.:-5 :sneaky:

Just the democrats trying to lure the faithful into their fold..the republicans have been trying to co-opt relgious voters for years..I guess it's pretty smart politically to try and make that association..Bush had been filmed in churches many times.

Well, yes of course he has attended church services. And he gave a speech before a political organization in a church ( a liberal org I might add). But he hasn't to my knowledge campaigned in a church. But this is about Harold Ford. Doesn't it bother you that he says church is where he learned right from wrong and that is where his moral compass comes from and that he will bring those values to the Senate? Isn't that a dangerous mixture of religion and politics?

ADAM (I've missed you, by the way) you won't be suprised in any way to hear me say I LOATHE the way politicians cloak themselves in the CROSS to appeal to voters! I don't care WHAT party they're in...it's pandering.

It's BLATANT.

It's disgusting.

:wah: And you know I am playing Devil's Advocate and instigator. I actually like Harold Ford as Democrats go. I don't agree with him on a lot of issues but I think he is an honorable man. I would vote for him over several incumbent Republicans Senators that I can think of. Now I bet Ford really scares you, doesn't he. :wah:

It's amazing how these days the idea of separation of Church and state is so far out of whack it's not even funny. The original idea was to prevent the government from endorsing a specific religion...at the time the King of England ran the Church of England there...plus Catholicism heavily influenced the politicians and royalty of many Western European nations like France and Spain. Now just because someone says "Under God" in the Pledge (which by the way wasn't in the original Pledge) it has to be wiped out for fear of offending an atheist.
